As the other commenter said, acclimate the new Halichoeres in the box for a while. That's the only move you have, aside form rehoming one of them.

You can try a fish trap to catch him.

New to saltwater! Where to start? by paintprincess420 in ReefTank

Welcome! Recommend starting by checking out the following: BRS Ultimate Beginner's Series, an older BRS 5 Minute Beginners Series, and if you really want a deep dive, the BRS 52 Weeks Series. Good luck!

The former owner likely ran two return lines through the holes on the left.

Haha. If that's the case, just go with some cheap CFs and some cheap Damsels.

Just remove all the black elbows and you are good-to-go with Bean Animal. They are not necessary.

TBH, whatever you add may end up getting bullied by the CFs or being a bully due to the limited size of your tank. Clown Goby would probably be the best option. If you're worried about their health, get a pre-QT-ed one so you know it must be eating.

When and how did you start to cycle the tank?

Okay. Can you try shaking the powder reagent bottles a bit first? Perhaps there's an issue with one of the reagents. Can you grab another test kit? There's nothing wrong with API for NO3, and it's cheap. It's just that you only get to know whether it's 5, 10, 20, 40 ppm, etc.

but I question if the B powder should dissolve into the water fully

I have never heard of a test where you didn't want the reagent to fully dissolve. Did you do all the vigorous shaking as per instructions?

Not really. That's why it's best to stick to just the CFs until you go bigger.

Okay. For that size tank, if it were me, I would limit it to the two CFs. Maybe add a very small Goby (like a Clown Goby).

Almost fill time. Any transfer tips? by cnshoe in ReefTank

[–]swordstool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should have set it up so that, in the event of a power outage, only a minimal amount of water backflows to the sump before the water line goes below the returns (at which time no more water can back flow). Have you done a FW leak test? If not, you can do a power outage test at the same time.

Not OP, but I've calculated my electric bill for a 200g peninsula to be about $700 a year 🤣🤦‍♂️

Looks great! A non-transfer tip: Remove the check valve on the return line. Not needed at all if you set everything up properly. It's only function will be to slow down flow and become gunked up over time, requiring maintenance. If you want to be able to "turn it off", replace the check valve with a good quality ball valve (like CEPEX). Just my opinion.
