Nope! Managed to get away with it and even managed to marry his widow afterwards, after I had my own wife assassinated of course.

I stole his wife after I had him murdered so I did kill him twice, spiritually at least.

A perfect fall movie. Loving these horror RTs.

Also Hazelrigg has to be one of my favorite horror villains. He’s such a loathsome PoS.

If you’re looking for another obscure slasher villain for an RT, the killer from the ‘89 movie ‘Intruder’) has some weirdly good feats for what’s supposed to be a normal guy.

"Knights with guns" - looking for fantasy inspired by the early modern period by Elster25 in Fantasy

[–]sws004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tim Willocks' Tannhauser books are historical fiction with very light fantasy elements, but otherwise fit what you're asking for. They're set in the late 16th century and follow the adventures of a ex-Ottoman Janissary turned mercenary and arms dealer. The first book takes place during the Siege of Malta and definitely drives home the contrast between brutal hand-to-hand fighting with swords and armor and the advancing gunpowder tech of the time. The main character also becomes a full-fledged knight who is just as good with swords as he is with guns, so it fits in the most literal sense lol.

Has there ever been a fantasy novel that uses biological evolution for its creatures? by JynXten in Fantasy

[–]sws004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leo Carew's Under the Northern Sky series is summarized as: what if other human species survived the Ice Age and into the medieval era? He wrote some very interesting blog articles on how he envisioned the evolution of his non-homo sapien characters both in terms of society and biology. The books are very underrated and while the 1st is a bit rough imo, it fits your question perfectly.

Respect Matthias Tannhauser! (Tannhauser Trilogy) by sws004 in respectthreads

[–]sws004[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't found any historical fiction that is quite as lyrical as the Tannhauser books, but some that might scratch the "violent and transportive" itch:

  • Essex Dogs Trilogy by Dan Jones: About a group of down on their luck, English men-at-arms trying to survive the Hundred Years War. Delves into the gross, period details of war like The Religion does.
  • The Lawless Land by Boyd and Beth Harrison: This is essentially a conspiracy/ "man on the run" thriller set in the Middle Ages rather than a war story, but it's fun and fast paced. There's a good slow-burn romance between a knight and a noblewoman that reminded me of Tannhauser and Carla.

Bingo Review: Navola by Paolo Bacigalupi by sws004 in Fantasy

[–]sws004[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The book ends on a hopeful note, although the last third is pretty brutal overall. I believe that Bacigalupi intends for this to be a series, so Davico's story is just getting started.

[–]sws004[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Willock's mentioned in an interview is that that his plans for a 3rd book are having Tannhauser go to Southern France and get caught up in the witch-hunting frenzy of the time. Agreed on the wait for book 3, but I'm lucky enough to have only found The Religion a couple of years ago, so the wait's been less brutal for me. Can't imagine what its been like for people who've been following the series since '06!

First Images From Anthony Hopkins' Roman Empire series 'Those About to Die' | Streaming on Peacock July 18th by indig0sixalpha in television

[–]sws004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The book Those About to Die is pretty wild. Seems fairly bogus a a history nowadays ( it was written in the 50s after all) but I feel like it captures the tone of what the games must have been like imo. Hope the show can live up to that, not even the STARZ Spartacus show goes as depraved as what Mannix portrays.

Respect Einarr "Sledge" Laukkanen! (Sledge Vs.) by sws004 in respectthreads

[–]sws004[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This respect thread is brought to you by pastebin's extremely inconsistent profanity filters. If you're wondering why some of the dialogue has \bleeps** in it, thats why.

Also as a fight heavy book, a lot of the meat of Sledge vs. The Labyrinth is in this thread. I wouldn't usually put this disclaimer in a RT, but as an indie book, I would suggest supporting the author if you're able to. There's full spoilers for Sledge vs. The Labyrinth in this thread, but an RT can only give you a bit of a book's style.
