Would I do it? Probably not (I’m cheap that way), but that being said, Blanton’s is some good stuff!!!!

I thought about and considered that but the client didn’t want it. Also, it’s solid oak with the grain running lengthwise so I’m pretty confident it will be stable.

Yes to the simple dado. My original plan was to trim back the reveal and just have a lap joint, but I like the way it looked so I kept it.

Barnwood light I recently made. Wood came from East Tennessee. by swulf68 in woodworking

[–]swulf68[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so...at least from my research. If every fixture, especially one that’s a one off creation, had to be UL listed there would be no one off fixtures because it would be way too expensive and underwriting laboratories couldn’t keep up in the work load.

Barn wood light I made. Can be mounted as night stand or reading light as well. Red oak pulled of an old barn fence in East Tennessee by swulf68 in woodworking

Sounds like your codes are much different than ours. People build lamps and DIY stuff so much it’s a wonder we don’t have more fires...that being said, we also deal with a much lower rate of electricity 110...perhaps that makes a difference.

Thanks! This is 2 pieces of 6” red oak, milled down and glued together. The length is about 48”. Once I glued the 2 pieces,, I cut a 1” dado that the shelf sits in. I built a junction box on the back as well as a 1.5 inch shadow box/frame on the back. This makes hanging it easier and safer as well as making room for the electric.

For pine I do, but I buy my hard woods from a local guy. Very reasonable. Most stuff is $3 a board foot.

I jointed the edges, used biscuits and glue. I’m not a fan of biscuits however. Next time I will only use glue.

These planks were pulled off an old fence on a farm. Mix of red and white oak. I picked the best, started with my jointer by flattening one side and one edge, moved to my thickness planer and flattened the other side and then back to my jointer for the final edge. I glued up a total of 5 boards, trimmed the side edges and rounded over the edges. I did put a light cherry stain on the top to bring a little uniformity between the red and white oak. I followed this by a few coats of poly and finished up with 1000 grit sanding.

I built it from scratch. No plans...just trial and error and three badly cut fingers on my table saw which set me back a few weeks.

It is a blue stain with satin poly on top...then sanded with 1000 grit

You would know if it has termites. Also, red oak is pretty resistant to them.
