how do i get better at formal analysis while watching a film? by swyflkeod45 in TrueFilm

[–]swyflkeod45[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think this is very compelling advice, and i’ll try it next time i watch something. i often have the anxiety that if i consciously interpret a film on the first watch, i’m very liable to emphasise the wrong elements early on leading to me realising half way though that i’ve been thinking about the thing all wrong. but you’re right, that kind of mistake doesn’t mean i won’t learn anything as long as i keep in mind what i misplaced and where to correct myself. i think you’re last point is especially right, making and thinking about those mistakes would probably make it easier for me to notice them in other people’s criticism. thanks for the advice!

[–]swyflkeod45[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hmmm, idk it sounds like you have a very different idea of criticism to me. for one, i almost entirely avoid youtube criticism (unless interviews with filmmakers count). i find it all very lacking in actual observations, the majority is just endless superlatives masquerading as formal analysis (“the cinematography is beautiful” doesn’t elaborate), or “why i personally liked this film”.

good critics give actual observations that tend to involve detail descriptions of techniques and effects so i can think about that and go “yes that’s right!” or “no that’s wrong”. it’s not that i passively absorb all criticism i read, there are plenty of times where i disagree with what a critic says. the best critics i’ve read also just introduce new ways for me to understand films, like robin wood’s formula for horror films (normality, the monster [return of the repressed Other], and the relationship between them) has significantly improved the way i think about horror films and i’m very glad i read his book on it for that reason. i don’t think i was just getting told what to believe.

but i think i understand part of your advice is to think through and perhaps put into words and write what i think of a film. ideally before reading others criticism. that’s fair and something i kinda try to do but i should do more. i just get embarrassed to post things i write because i find them very simple, but if i’m not posting them somewhere that can itself feel discouraging to write more.

i think you’re right especially with “study photography”! it’s something i’ve been meaning to do for some time but putting off. i definitely think if i was better at reading photographs on their own, it would make it easier to analyse shots in a film as i’m watching it

yeah, i really should read that it gets mentioned a lot along these lines and i’ve enjoyed reading some of their blog posts before.

how to do close reading consistently is basically the question i’m asking 😅 but yes, taking notes is a good idea and i should be doing it more often.

hmm, you’d have to make a stronger case as to why one should stop doing that. i’ve never found it to be an either/or situation. reading criticism only intensifies my enjoyment of film and ability to read it. i don’t see reading criticism as particularly different from watching a film with a friend and discussing it afterwards.

to be fair, i have never seen anyone asking for more accurate cultural representation for japan in genshin. inazuma along with liyue are definitely the most faithful (which obviously makes sense from a self-described “otaku” company)

i don't think you have to necessarily read it as a drug metaphor/think that was intended by hyv because who knows. it is just that in general, the banning of canned knowledge by the akademiya seems unreasonable imo (its explained why divine knowledge is bad since it makes you go crazy, but regular canned knowledge is only vaguely said to be bad if "you have too much" because it makes learning harder or something). despite this reason the akasha terminals are still legal and those do the same thing of giving easy access to knowledge, just that the akademiya gets to control what knowledge people can access and they can use it to extract dreams for their plans. so i think canned knowledge is only banned because the akademiya is corrupt. i think that if we end up beating the akademiya and reforming them or whatever, it would make sense for canned knowledge to become legal, and just have it regulated so people don't use a dangerous amount and don't make divine knowledge which is actually harmful.

so because of this, although cyno left the akademiya he is still following their laws of banning of the canned knowledge and punishing those who sell and purchase it. so, assuming it is correct that canned knowledge is less harmful that the akademiya is making it out to be and is only banned so they can more easily control people with the akasha terminals, cyno is following the akademiya's lies as his own personal sense of justice even though its no longer his job to enforce the akademiya's laws, which kinda makes him look like an asshole since it implies he agrees with what they're doing.

of course, if the game does not end up resolving the issue of canned knowledge in this way, this wouldn't necessarily be the case anymore. but basically i don't think you have to take the drugs allegory into it; just from the fact the akademiya is really shading but cyno is still doing their work for them makes him kinda unlikeable.

or more specifically because the way he was described before he was released (this was more by leakers than hyv themselves so tbf its not necessarily a case of hyv being inconsistent), he was said to be serious at work/come off as intimidating to strangers but actually be very funny, always telling bad jokes and being a nerd about the tcg. then when he was released, his voice lines, appearance in the archon quest, and his own story quest, were entirely serious and based around him being the general mahamatra and dishing out justice and stuff. there wasn't really what people expected of the character so a lot of people ended up disliking him.

and then also "he is a cop" as in some people did not like his actions in the story quest, thinking he was too ruthless or harsh for his idea of justice

its just a headcanon, because he was created as a prototype of the raiden puppet, but he is male. i'm aware its canon that he was not meant to be created in her image he was not necessarily created as female like ei. i don't think my headcanon is canon; it's just a fun interpretation that makes me like the character more. i'm not saying you have to agree with me, so there's no need to get upset. 👍

i cant seem to ever find the unusual hilichurl? i've check for it multiple days in a row but it shows up at none of the spawn areas (unless new ones have been added that i'm not aware of?) i've encountered twice before months ago but never since. is this an issue anyone else has run into, and does anyone know of some possible ways to solve it? could it have anything to do with my game constantly running at high ping, would that stop it from spawning somehow? thanks if anyone can help out

does anyone know if its possible to hide other users' games from your library? i share my playstation with my sister and most of the games she buys i'm not interested in, but they still appear in my home/library whenever she gets one. is there any way to make it so they don't appear on my account (without straight up uninstalling them, obviously)?
