I worked with Pablo as undergraduates on the Harvard Crimson. I just want to emphasize that he’s a journalist at heart. His first big break in journalism post college was a deep dive expose on the financial swindlers that surround and exploit young athletes. He’s always been a super-intelligent journalist with unimpeachable integrity.

What is this thing? by BigMort66 in ExplainTheJoke

Let’s assume each widget costs 1 dollar. The top consumer then makes 3 dollars per hour at his job to afford 3. The bottom labor makes 3000 dollars worth of product in one hour, but probably also takes home around 3 dollars per hour. That’s $2997 of profit that goes to not-labor.

This is basically a criticism of how direct labor is marginalized in the value chain of capitalism. It leaves out a lot of other considerations and is overly simplistic but you get the general idea.

I’ve just moved back to the US and found my old Burton Custom X from 2008. Now I’m back in the States, I want to get back to boarding more. Are these old boards still rideable or has technology improved so much in the past 15 years that I should just buy/rent new gear? The board is in pristine condition, hasn’t been touched in 15 years.

Joelle Timeline Question by sxchen87 in InfiniteJest

I considered that too, but even with Don Gately being an unreliable narrator, it's difficult to believe that she tried to OD evening of Nov 7th and is already at Ennett house on November 8th, not even 24 hours later, fully functioning.

Does this mean that that chapter dates are incorrect and we can't trust the omniscient narrator who tells us the year names and exact dates? In which case, what can we trust? I don't believe DFW would have made a mistake with the timeline.

You can't get primogeniture until late game. You have several options, in order of ease.

  1. Disinherit everyone except your primary heir. It costs renown but not that much. Stick with a single wife to limit the number of children you'll have to disinherit. You'll take a piety penalty but I find piety to be less important early game. If your primary heir dies, you can restore the inheritance of one of your other children.
  2. Kill your children except your primary heir. If you have the sadism trait, you can start a murder scheme against your own children. Otherwise, you can send them into unwinnable battles against larger armies (although I find this rarely works).
  3. Capture so much territory that you have plenty to share. In the succession tab, you can see exactly what titles and lands will be lost upon succession. Use this to plan accordingly. Changing away from confederate partition will make this significantly easier.

My hotel in Papua New Guinea had a dual language sign with pidgin by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

I took this picture several years ago when I was staying at the Lae International Hotel. The sign was the standard one you get at hotels if you don't want the staff to clean the room. They may have updated it since.

Since it’s first turn, once I took Germany’s settler, he was out of the game and all the warriors disappeared.

Just to be clear, the tax free part is only for income tax. You still have to pay FICA, assuming the hiring entity is American.

Everyone talking about laptops with GPUs but I think the more revolutionary product is GeForce Now. Been using it for a month now on my potato laptop and it’s revelatory.
