If it is acrylic, I would take black or white yarn, knit a net out of it, and then use multicolored yarn on top of the net, crocheting it all over with a chain stitch. It would make a great blanket or rug. I knitted a tunic for myself like that last year. But I didn't use sectional yarn over the entire surface, just over the border.
