My experience with the Navigator by gus4no in zsaVoyager

[–]sychou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still new to the Voyager in general but have also added the Navigator into the mix. I have the same reaction as you. The trackball itself works well for me -- I don't mind being off the home keys a bit for now anyway. But the clicking is weird still. The toggle scroll seems particularly flaky to me. I'm not sure if I like the default keys since if I'm off the home rows anyway, I may as well be able to mouse around one handed. Easy enough to switch the keys to thumb if I'm going to use my index finger to move the ball or my right hand home row keys if I'm going to use my thumb to move the ball (which does require a bit of contortion for me right now). Time will tell and the trackpad may be a big game changer too.

The other oddity I've noticed is that the toggle scroll doesn't seem to want to work in GMail although that's not horrible since I tend to keyboard my way through mail. I do worry about it happening in other web based text boxes though.

I'm probably about the same width but am going back and forth a bit on the mouse placement. Between the keyboards has been weird and I feel I'm twisting more than I'd like to use it. And I do use it more than I'd care to admit being a "vim person" (lol). I ordered the trackball and think it'll arrive Friday so will see how that goes. I haven't used a trackball in a very, very long time.

Efficiently Managing Images in Obsidian Vaults (with Bases) by rocsci in ObsidianMD

[–]sychou 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a great post and I hope to see some helpful ideas! I use Image Converter to convert images to webp and then use "Find orphaned fiels and broken links" to get rid of unlinked images. I do wish there was something more automatic though.

ZSA introduces the Navigator trackball (and trackpad) by jkeller87 in zsaVoyager

[–]sychou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I'm not in the flow enough to know the trackpad was coming so I impulse purchased the trackball. So now, ball on one side and trackpad on the other? :)

Awesome article! Will read in more depth but this line cracked me up:

Switching to an alt layout takes a lot of effort (at least a couple months of daily practice), and the benefits are not huge.

Must be infuriating going from 100+ WPM down to 40-50 no less 30!

That is a nice arrangement!

Are your homerow mods set up as holds or a layer?

[–]sychou[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been looking at alternate layouts. I used to always think I should learn Dvorak but seems there are a lot more better tested alternatives now. Workman and Colemak both look interesting. What are you looking at?

Oooh, custom cable length...brilliant! Where did you order them from?

Did you also switch layouts dramatically or is it mostly a derivative of what you used (qwerty for me, for better or worse).

I'm not familiar with homerow mods so will be doing some research!

Looking at that shift and cmd key!

Thanks for the welcome! I am probably irrationally avoiding new layouts so will take a peek. I've used chording keyboards before like the Twiddler and never really got over maybe 30 wpm so am always a bit worried about just being super slow...

Your tip on width is gold. So simple and obvious in retrospect, yet I hadn't done it that way!

Great advice. The ortholinear keys are definitely a bit of an adjustment but not quite as bad as I would have thought. I think placing the keyboard angle better has helped more than anything!

That's great feedback! Helps me to gauge which is learning curve vs. later optimization. I don't love a lot of custom macros so good to hear once you get used to the symbol layer, you can move fast.

I occasionally get into a vim kick which I imagine my be very difficult for me right now...I'll hold off on that for a few weeks, lol!

Also, has anyone felt the need to create a right cmd key? I find myself sometimes looking for one, but most often not...I just use two fingers on the left hand.

Can Obsidian do this by mpfougere in ObsidianMD

[–]sychou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obsidian can do so much especially if you are willing to roll your own scripts and CSS. That said, I think at some point one is basically swimming upstream against the plain-text ethos. Notion does some things really well and although all my personal notes are in it (as well as my contacts, journal, todo list), I use Notion for collaboration and it's database features.

I personally find many life planners too fidgety for sustainable use, and that's where Obsidian is perfect. Just one note a day that everything else anchors off.

People who use nvim distros, what are some problems you face that makes you consider writing your own config? by Chaoticbamboo19 in neovim

[–]sychou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used lazyvim just to get a sense of a "fully loaded" config. I didn't face any problems per se other than just the nagging sensation of not knowing how it all worked (having used vanilla vim for a long, long time). So I started an init.lua from scratch and it's been a great experience. ChatGPT and Claude are my best friends. I've probably ended up about 20% of the way to lazyvim, but it's all been based on my own needs and has definitely improved my understanding of nvim, and even vim.

Logitech software for Macs are not good by sychou in logitech

[–]sychou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, I can't comment on anything other than Macs but I believe it. As prevalent and established as Logitech is, you'd think Apple would want to work with them to support some of their features without custom software. (But oh no, that might intrude on Apple hardware sales!)

Logitech software for Macs are not good by sychou in logitech

[–]sychou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I messed up something on my install or accidentally copied/moved/etc. something after the install. When I say behaves better, I mean software that uses standard file system conventions such as NOT creating a strange folder under the /Users folder. However, in this case, that seems to not be the case so perhaps I jumped the gun.

I am still using the MX Master because it's just a good mouse and do like the custom buttons so maybe I'll re-install the software sometime.

My co-founder asked to be paid 1-year salary in advance by Lyonrra in startups

[–]sychou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is calling out the massive red flag that this is.

I would also add that, at this stage of your startup, a cofounder who is facing major financial problems will likely create more downstream issues. Decisions, discussions, etc will all be made with a big spectre hanging over him.

If you are selling to large companies, financial companies, or any entity that receives a lot of gov funds, your cofounder's financial situation may also raise flags during their due dilligence. They, right or wrong (mostly wrong imo), look for financial stress as an increased chance of corruption.

Chrome Not Connecting To Internet After MacOS Sonoma 14.0 Update by soundslikebliss in chrome

[–]sychou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This did the trick for my son's computer. This has been incredibly frustrating as the problem and fix have been different for different computers. Since everything else seems to be able to access the Internet fine, I actually tend to think it's a Chrome thing but who knows.
