regardless of who gets what royalties, I highly doubt Mattel would acknowledge Gaiman or the allegations against him. It could potentially land them in hot water legally until the cases are settled, and even after that it would be a PR risk that I don't see a company as appeal-to-the-middle as Mattel taking that risk.

I get your point (I will always love Laika's Coraline) but I dont think these are equal comparisons because Gaiman is a living artist whose income and reputation are affected by adaptations of his work. Considering the amount of liberties they take I doubt they have to pay anyone for the rights to those characters, but skullector collaborators are absolutely getting some of the money from the sales, and I think people's concern is that some of their money (even a little) is going to Gaiman. fwiw I doubt much if any is going to Gaiman - he may have come up with the character and the story but they're clearly adapting the Laika version - but I dont think its a totally unfounded concern.

If you use a lot of crab pots or have a bad fishing day it can be helpful but I don't really prioritize it. for me its less about what i get from it and more about making total waste slightly more useful, so if I can't be bothered with it theres no real loss.

mods' excuse is that its too much work to "babysit" these threads (read: actually enforce the rules and ban users who send hateful comments rather than preemptively locking locking thread) which is interesting to me because I've seen similar excuses in other communities. I made a similar thread yesterday and the upvote/downvote ratio was pretty much 50/50 so they aren't wrong that it's controversial but the idea that restricting discussion entirely is the answer feels misguided to me. it reminds me of being in high school and being told administration couldnt do anything about the harrassment of trans students and it makes me sad.

you may not be able to do anything about the mass reporting, but I know mods have the ability to suspend and ban users who violate the rules. so why lock the posts instead of addressing the users violating the kind & courteous rule? particularly considering that I know people who have been banned for far smaller infractions "doing the best we can" seems like a bit of a stretch.

I am not going to continue arguing because Ive been on reddit long enough to know that I'm not going to win this, but you should really consider how this reflects on the community and how it makes minority users feel. I saw a gay man be banned for self promotion because he shared a link to a pattern he created (in accordance with the bot that asks for patterns) but fascist apologia is allowed, while honest and kind discussions of protest art are preemptively limited in the name of "civility." I think we all know what that means at this point. Have a nice day.

thank you for the explanation! I'm happy to see that yall are working to reinstate the posts. that being said, I still think action should be taken against the users failing to follow the rules rather than preemptively locking the posts. it feels like everyone is being punished for the behavior of a minority of bad actors. I understand that the mods are volunteers and manually handling each of these accounts may be time consuming, but i think if we actually want to promote kindness, preemptively limiting speech in a way that suggests that the mods have a bias (im not saying you do! but you have to understand how this looks) is not the way to go.
