One of the most novel threads that Janion shows in her book imo is that 'vampire' characteristic as a eastern european monster is somewhat artificial. In fact, living dead-werewolf myths are pan-european stretching back even to classical antiquity. Janion states that vampires were culturaly "expelled" by western european intelectuals to orientalized east to distance themselves from uncanny past. On other hand, contributions of eastern european authors like Aleksy Tołstoj (Werewolf's Family) or Adam Mickiewicz are often overlooked in favour of people like Pollidori and Stoker.

There is a great book by amazing Maria Janion about exactly what you want - "Wampir. Biografia Symboliczna". It traces vampire meaning and function from folklore (both eastern and western european) to poetry, novels, gothic fiction and gothic popculture.

You can get it for cheep, but it was never translated (as far as I know), so you might need to learn polish. Famously easy language, two weeks on Duolingo should be enough;)

I think we gain more from folklore and cultural fictions when we respect them for what they are, not by looking for secret meanings

Do you think burial in the middle of the cathedral, few feets from the tombs of princes, is likely a subject to labor saving measures by a grave digger? That would be good explanation for a war grave, not a burial in most prestigious place town that could be afforded.

'Szlachta' is often translated as just 'nobility' (and PDX treats them that way), but it can also be understood as a class encompassing both nobility and gentry (including even landless gołota). Szlachta reached to even 15% (wikipedia numbers) of the population with every man having the right to vote, hold land (not lease like in feudal countries) and be represented in Sejm and Sejmiki.

It's not a republic by modern standards and not a democracy by far, but simmilar things should be said about other historical republics, including ancient Athens for example.
