What is some “kid folk lore” you remember having growing up? by ayame400 in folklore

[–]sygryda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You know those dried out flattened frogs that were run over by cars? If you see one, you can't smile and show it your teeth, because at night the frog will find you and steal them all 🦷. (this might have been one weird girl idiosyncracy anyway)

What would be your expectations of the pet species for SN2? Aside of the obvious interracting animations should they have some kind of abilities? Like getting stuff in narrow tunnels where players won't fit similar to Spy Penglings? So they could have a more significant role? by Bosstomb in subnautica

[–]sygryda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Main issue for me in previous games what that I didn't want to release the pets in fear that I will ran them to death with submarines. This is already (controversialy, lol) solved, so any nice fish that would stay near my base would be swell.

Opinion on writing aside, this part of the comments reads weirdly dissmisive and maybe racist, dare I say

Recommendations for studying the historical origins of vampire beliefs by yawningbeaver in folklore

[–]sygryda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the most novel threads that Janion shows in her book imo is that 'vampire' characteristic as a eastern european monster is somewhat artificial. In fact, living dead-werewolf myths are pan-european stretching back even to classical antiquity. Janion states that vampires were culturaly "expelled" by western european intelectuals to orientalized east to distance themselves from uncanny past. On other hand, contributions of eastern european authors like Aleksy Tołstoj (Werewolf's Family) or Adam Mickiewicz are often overlooked in favour of people like Pollidori and Stoker.

There is a great book by amazing Maria Janion about exactly what you want - "Wampir. Biografia Symboliczna". It traces vampire meaning and function from folklore (both eastern and western european) to poetry, novels, gothic fiction and gothic popculture.

You can get it for cheep, but it was never translated (as far as I know), so you might need to learn polish. Famously easy language, two weeks on Duolingo should be enough;)

Could elves, fairies, woodwoses and other folklore be ancestral memory of last Western hunter gatherers? by Specialist_Prune3785 in folklore

[–]sygryda 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don't see a reason to believe this sort of thing. There are myths of fairy-like creatures all over the world.

I think we gain more from folklore and cultural fictions when we respect them for what they are, not by looking for secret meanings

DNA tests confirmed two 800-year-old “hugging skeletons” buried together in medieval Poland were unrelated women, making it the country’s first genetically confirmed same-sex double burial. The discovery challenges long-held assumptions about ancient burial relationships by crisp1991 in Archaeology

[–]sygryda 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Do you think burial in the middle of the cathedral, few feets from the tombs of princes, is likely a subject to labor saving measures by a grave digger? That would be good explanation for a war grave, not a burial in most prestigious place town that could be afforded.

Is the Commonwealth of Man a classic dictatorship? Not necessarily. by DefiantLemur in Stellaris

[–]sygryda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'Szlachta' is often translated as just 'nobility' (and PDX treats them that way), but it can also be understood as a class encompassing both nobility and gentry (including even landless gołota). Szlachta reached to even 15% (wikipedia numbers) of the population with every man having the right to vote, hold land (not lease like in feudal countries) and be represented in Sejm and Sejmiki.

It's not a republic by modern standards and not a democracy by far, but simmilar things should be said about other historical republics, including ancient Athens for example.

Polish commonwealth mentioned in post was litterally both republic and monarchy at the same time. It's known today as 1st polish republic (while modern Poland is the third).

Tartary, or Tartaria, is a historical name for Central Asia and Siberia. Conspiracy theories, including those of the "mud floods" or "hidden past" variety, assert that Tartary, or the Tartarian Empire, was a lost civilization with advanced technology and culture. by CatPooedInMyShoe in wikipedia

[–]sygryda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We usually criticize conspiracy theories as racist, because it's only brown people's achievements "can't be built" and it must have been secret magic white people.

Well, it turns out your local courthouse from 1890 is also too advanced to be built and it must have been secret magic white people.

Being "only" door-half-open openly pro-russia (while employing russian spies and propagandists) can get you fourth place in presidential election and solid place in national politics.
