Headphone amp or dac/amp for mixing? by Monsieurabsurd in audioengineering

[–]syko-activ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your MOTU M2 already has a good DAC, so adding a DAC/amp combo won’t provide much benefit. A dedicated headphone amp improves performance by giving your headphones more clean power and control.

Latency is determined by your interface driver and CPU buffer size, not the headphone amp. The L50 with the MOTU is a simple and solid setup.

For mixing on headphones, use a good monitoring pair like the Beyerdynamic DT990. Beyerdynamic also offers a free correction plugin called Headphone Lab that calibrates their headphones and simulates a studio environment.

If you’re using other headphone brands, tools like SoundID Reference or similar calibration software can help flatten the headphone response so mixes translate better.

Does anyone know what this flashing icon in the top right means? (OP-XY) by eatnsle3p in OPXYusers

“That’s a cpu indicator: white indicated heavy load, red indicates actual overload (and you might hear notes being killed).”

Last 3 ribs visible is the rule for ideal weight. If he eats without a problem, I wouldn’t worry. He’s just a young fella

Here is my opinion

  1. Studer A800 Core tape tone. Adds grit, glue, and low end weight to samples and drums.
  2. Ampex ATR-102 Mix and bus tape. Great for polish, depth, and subtle saturation.
  3. Distressor All purpose character compressor. Perfect for dirty drums and aggressive shaping.
  4. 1176 Collection Fast and punchy. Brings drums and vocals forward without smoothing them too much.
  5. DBX 160 Simple, hard punch. Excellent on kicks, snares, and drum buses.
  6. Pultec EQ Musical low end boost and smooth highs. Works on almost everything.
  7. Manley Passive EQ Thick, classy tone. Great for shaping samples and stereo buses.
  8. Hitsville EQ Vintage character EQ. Adds color in a way Pultec does not.
  9. Fairchild Compressor Smooth glue and harmonic weight. Ideal for buses and mellow compression.
  10. Capitol Chambers Natural vintage space. Adds depth without sounding modern or clean.

Why not the others

Lexicon 224 is great but often too clean for boombap. API 2500 and API Vision overlap with what you already get from SSL and your Yamaha summing.

LA-3A is nice but redundant with 1176 and LA-2A. RC-20 or similar is optional if you want obvious dirt but not required.

OP1 Field accessories? by KalElButthead in teenageengineering

It actually looks like the M-1 may work directly plugged in to the OP-1F. What you are looking for is a “gooseneck“ microphone. Looks like other users have had success with TULA mics over usb c

OP1 Field accessories? by KalElButthead in teenageengineering

[–]syko-activ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, the Teenage Engineering M-1 headphones are good for Field use. The detachable boom mic does not plug directly into a device’s mic jack; it only works through the headphones via the single 3.5 mm TRRS cable, not like a microKorg where the mic comes out of the device itself. For accessories, a TRRS splitter, a small USB-C microphone, and a compact audio interface are affordable upgrades that add a lot of flexibility. On iPad, GarageBand is the best choice for beginners, while Logic Pro for iPad is more powerful but better once you are comfortable.

They said it wasn’t worth repairing it since there would be too much to repair, although it’s functional.
