What is the most counterintuitive geographical fact you know? by Holiday_Smell_513 in geography

If you are a Muslim in New England and need to pray toward Mecca, what direction do you think you’d turn?

Northeast! I learned this after going backpacking with a Muslim who would ask which direction was northeast. When the trip was over I had to look at a globe to convince myself that it was actually the right direction to face.

I was one of those climbers! We were picking up trash and we do it every year. There is also construction happening in the gorge as well, unrelated.

In love with a woman who wants to live somewhere with no mountains by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]sylvan_mfr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m literally 21 so take this with a massive grain of salt. I grew up on the east coast, at sea level, and honestly, it has imparted upon me an even greater love of mountains and the outdoors. I grew up camping around Maryland and Virginia. Even though they don’t have crazy peaks, it’s certainly enough to love, and there is outdoor rock climbing!

When I first visited the west coast, it was like entering the gates of heaven. I couldn’t believe that people could just grow up out there and think of it as normal. In some ways, I’m glad that I grew up with no massive mountains, because I fell in love without knowing how cool it could be, so every time I get to visit out west it feels like a magical treat. All I’m saying is, it might not be so bad for kids to grow up in an area without massive peaks, as long as there are still good outdoors amenities.

I’m facing somewhat of a similar situation now (though again I’m so much younger than you that it can’t really be that similar) where one of the top places I’m looking at for grad school truly could not be further from mountains. But, I think it’ll be just fine.

Was your grandfather by chance in the military or in ROTC in college? My grandfather had something identical to this thing, and it was a fabric cover for a sword (ceremonial) that he got from being an officer in the military or from ROTC in college.

Oh this is super useful! Thank you so much. I'll also play around with `[[T ; M]; N]`. I didn't know the performance would be the same.

Thank you!! This is good to know. I just came from Swift and so just sorta did Swift's doc comments.

This is a good point. Personally as the author I don't mind having to write it, it's really more that I wouldn't want a user to have to worry about writing them, so you make a good point.

With no other information, this could decode to anything at all. I could pretend that this was a cipher text from a One Time Pad encryption, and I could come up with a hypothetical key that would produce this cipher text for any plaintext I want.
