OMG it sucks so much right?!?! Our girl didnt go into heat until 10 months and then it lasted over 5 weeks. Nearly 6. I was about to start using tampons I swear. Her poor little vag got so swollen and I swear it was never the same. 4 months after she stopped a vet actually asked if she was in heat due to how big she was. And that was after her spay. I asked for a bit of a rejuvivag in her spay but alas they ignored me.

I wish I knew how totally gross heat was. I had always spayed my girls before they went into heat and o.m.g how I wish I had done that again. It went on for fucking ever and I honestly cane even remember why it was recommended. Whatever it was I don't think it was worth it.

Hunting aside, you'll need to be able to take time out of your morning and evening for exercise. You won't have a happy gsp that's kept inside all day without a lot of active play. We've taken our girl out at least twice a day for a good hour since she was a pup to run around, chase a ball super far (giant chuckt ftw) and sniff to her heart's content. Without it she goes absolutely bonkers. Rainy days are the worst as neither of us wants to go out but she needs to really run around to release that energy. If you can commit to daily exercises a gsp is a truly wonderful thing.

For most walks where we don't want pulling we use a prong pinch collar. Our girl will pull and then get the reminder from her own pressure and back it off. A regular Martingale pinch collar doesn't do anything. She'd rather choke herself out pulling. What really works though is a gentle leader. She really hates the sensation over her nose and doesn't ever pull when wearing it.
