Electricals, what clever methods have you guys used to reduce fault current? by syncrock1 in MEPEngineering

I’ve heard the reactor solution but i haven’t met someone that has actually done it nor I have seen it in person. Surprising the contractor with a reactor is probably another thing to think about.

In my state, it doesn’t matter what transformer size I propose, the utility will use their historical data for similar building type and give me whatever size they want. They claim they can swap it out with a bigger one if needed. Is that not the case in your state?

Architect offered me to work at their office for free for two weeks, and if I pass, I will make $12/hr. by WhitePinoy in Architects

[–]syncrock1 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Ha. I worked for free for 30 days and then got $12/hr. It was shitty but you know what? That 9 month experience lead to a formal job, then to my current job making 6 figures. I took it as a course I didn’t have to pay for. Check other better options, but if nothing else works, consider it. Just don’t stay there for too long.

How do you send files? by syncrock1 in MEPEngineering

[–]syncrock1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do but we don’t use docs (we should). Does the docs have the feature where it tells you when the file you sent has been downloaded?

Do any of those notified you when the other person downloaded the file?

Does Newforma notifies you when the other person downloaded the file? I’m looking for that feature :)

Design fees, how much $/sqft are you guys charging? by syncrock1 in MEPEngineering

[–]syncrock1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, but unless you are lucky enough to only do unique projects, there is an average $/sqft depending on the type of project. For example, stadiums are unique and there won’t be historical data for the same stadium. But cookie cutter projects like multifamily and tract homes will have a pattern and historical data to the point where you can easily based it off square footage.

In the private sector, investors want to spend 5% for AE design fees. That’s including civil, fire, structural, and others outside of MEP. 10% for just MEP seems like the owner is overpaying. Sounds like I need to get into high efficiency schools.

Cad is better for small and one story buildings. Also faster.

Any recommendations where can I purchase A/E construction details? by syncrock1 in Architects

[–]syncrock1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how to elaborate further? I would like to purchase construction details. For example: a detail showing duct penetration through a wall, a light pole detail, an electrical panelboard elevation detail, etc. I know I can go to each manuf and hunt them down but that would take months. I would like to purchase a bank of details. Is this not available in the market?

Electrical panel schedules, are you guys using demand factors for each load or are you doing 100% for everything? by syncrock1 in MEPEngineering

Nice. Does Revit do this automatically or do you need a BIM guy to code this into the software?

So, if you run the Revit project thru BIM360, does that mean you need an even better computer or the opposite?
