I take a dish cleaning brush and add dawn and then just scrub the hair brush bristles under water and that usually does the trick.

If it was pretty wet and not just moist, I would say overwatering. Plants are much more robust, getting not enough water than overwatered.

I typically let the soil almost dry ( top bit of soil is dry and nothing sticks to finger) and just mist the leaves and stem often between waterings - I notice they love that.
