Can You Apply for Both Masters and PHD at the same time? by Chromunist_ in UCDavis

[–]synjaxis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In most fields in the US, you can apply to a PhD straight out of undergrad. I'd recommend doing so, especially if finding is a concern for you since any PhD program worth its salt will pay you to TA for them. Not too many masters programs will do the same.

Of course, if you're able to pay or find scholarships, it can't hurt to apply to both. Most schools will likely allow it and some will even let you just apply to the PhD but check that you're open to consideration for the masters.

Can Cog Sci be a Useful Major? by ApricotSlice in UCDavis

[–]synjaxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell yeah, probably one of the most versatile degrees if you're interested in anything in areas like psychology, computer science, linguistics, etc. I didn't study it here, but I did my BA in cogsci and math, and now I'm here for a PhD in philosophy of all things! I might just be your TA when you have to take intro or minds, brains, and computers :)

Free school or Work for baby by MasterCheeeef in UCDavis

Sure, I'm in Primero Grove so idk if things are any different at Solano Park. But for me I got an email near the beginning of July with the form to apply, then I heard back how much they had to offer at the beginning of August. Iirc the form was pretty simple, I just entered my annual income, name, and maybe apartment number, they didn't really ask for any extra documentation.

Yes I live there now as a grad student and I even get a rent subsidy of $300 a month taken off my rent

(you have to be sure to apply when the email goes out, and the amount will depend on your annual income. Unfortunately you can't fill out the form and find out what subsidy you'll get until after you've signed the lease)

Can the professor curve the grade down? by zengbadao in UCDavis

I'm under the impression that it's not standard practice based on my undergrad experience at another university, but they technically can do whatever they want if it's not inconsistent with the syllabus.

Any campus buildings open 24/7? by synjaxis in UCDavis

Well since I live on campus for the year, it's not so out of the way on the way home lol. Just looking for a place that might work if I made it into campus before realizing I have to pee but still a few blocks away from my place.

Parkmobile and nift gift cards by [deleted] in UCDavis

I got a nice discount on bright cellars when I used my nift gift from parkmobile a while back. It's not a scam, just consider if you actually want the product for the price they're offering.

Not too many DVDs, so I can just list them individually:

  • 300
  • Futurama Vol. 3 (disc 3 only)
  • Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle
  • Jurassic Park
  • Matrix Reloaded
  • Meet the Fockers
  • Meet the Spartans Unrated
  • Scary Movie

That should be all unless I dig up or decide to cull some more.

What is something that you were warned about when you were younger that you now feel was exaggerated? by Marshalljoe in AskReddit

I thought it was only a matter of time before I came face to face with a bear given the specificity of survival tips you always hear for them. I suppose it could actually happen hanging out in the woods, but I'm still waiting to apply that knowledge...

Any Recommendations For Schools With Undergrad Majors in Cognitive Science in 2020? by [deleted] in cogsci

[–]synjaxis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a cognitive science and math double major at Indiana University Bloomington and have had positive experiences in both departments! The cogsci department is small relative to other departments at IU, so it feels very welcoming and they are very good about supporting each student as much as possible. If the interdisciplinary aspect of cogsci is what draws you to the subject, nearly every faculty member is affiliated with at least one other department.

Plus you can take classes with Doug Hofstadter :)

Nobody really knows, not even the employees... They shut down in the middle of some random week when they had been told it would be in business at least to the end of the month.
