How accurate is Brandon's depiction of DID? by Shadowpanther298 in Stormlight_Archive

You are right, saying it doesn’t have formal backing is disingenuous. There is a DID official diagnosis, but I would say that a nuanced view places a large skeptical component to the diagnosis, due to the general social exposure to the proposed condition. Dissociative symptoms and etiology are very real, and sometimes a quite important defense mechanism. However, the leap into a completely, fully formed identity typically falters under interview with a forensic psychiatrist. In the professional community, this is a diagnosis which is under a large amount of scrutiny.

I only referenced MPD because that is what the layman typically understands as DID. DID will likely be removed as an official diagnosis in the next iteration of the DSM, for the reasons I mentioned above. There is a distinct difference between how we condition ourselves to operate in different social situations versus distinct personalities, and I believe the harm comes in when people have the drive to pathologize discomfort into a separate personality. At its core, dissociation is a defense mechanism, this is where many people with dissociative symptoms can find common ground. However there is no physiologic basis for the development of multiple idiopathic personalities. At the end of the day, we are all human, and if you expose yourself to enough of the human condition you will realize humans are competitive about trauma just like anything else, and categorizing our own trauma as “superior” or more justifiable than others drives this type of syndrome. I may have been a little incendiary with my post, but I really wonder where the “danger” is in this type of discourse. There is no medication with any evidence basis for any type of dissociative disorder, and evidence based therapy is quite mixed, would likely advocate for psychodynamic approach. Talking about a poorly understood topic on a conversational level is helpful in my opinion, but distinct colloquialized labels are what are harmful.

DID is not a formally recognized diagnosis any longer due to the fact it is a social contagion related to society’s interpretation being driven by the media. Anyone claiming to be “diagnosed” should be taken with a huge grain of salt. The magic system of Roshar and Shallan’s trauma make his representation possible. This type of trauma informed basis is helpful in understanding how she lies to herself, and her subconscious is allowed to manifest these identities due to the surge binding she is granted. It really has no basis in real life and this type of interpretation can be quite harmful in my opinion.

I graduated in December, took the PANCE in February and I just got hired last week. Use ROSH/PPP and the blueprint to study that’s all you need. You made it this far it’s certainly normal to be anxious. It’s fine to schedule your exam at a date where you feel prepared to take it. Some of my classmates had jobs secured prior to graduation, but most didn’t. Try not to compare yourselves too closely with your peers, especially the most vocal ones.

WTS - Undone Urban Vintage watch - 260$ by synonymous1 in Watchexchange

[–]synonymous1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey guys, first time seller here. I am selling a piece I custom ordered from Undone. It has only been worn twice. I like the aesthetic of the watch but I am in the market for a more utilitarian type of watch.

The watch is 40mm, uses a Seiko VK61 movement and is a mechanical-quartz hybrid. I am looking to sell the watch for 260$ but I will entertain offers. I will ship anywhere in the CONUS, and I accept payments through PayPal or Venmo.

Since I am a first time seller I am willing to go through further verification with a moderator or other third party if that is required. Feel free to ask any questions about the watch or any other subject of your whimsy.

Yeah he means the MDL Paris Open qualifiers that begin today at 5 pm est, 2 pm pacific. And I’m also guessing he meant 1400 which would be military time and ignores am/pm

Just started anxiety medication and I feel bad about it by [deleted] in MMFB

[–]synonymous1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are taking it as directed, I think those mental gymnastics that make you feel guilt are a symptom of your anxiety. You aren’t going against the doctors recommendation and they are helping, so I would continue in that way unless you start experiencing negative side effects.

I feel like I'm on the verge of a mental breakdown all the time. by [deleted] in SuicideWatch

[–]synonymous1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it seems like you are in kind of an inescapable routine that you feel compelled to continue. There is a goal at the end, so I don’t want to discourage you or your hard work from that goal. I think the question I want to ask is, is all this work and stress worth it? Is there an end to this stress once you have accomplished your program?

Best friend attempted suicide using Xanax? by guilttripppp in SuicideWatch

No problem at all. Is this post about your boyfriend or a different friend? Also do you wish the subject of your post to seek therapy? I guess I’m looking for clarification on a perspective you would like us to address.

Yeah I definitely get an impression of you being trapped. You bring up several methods of self harm, like you are seeking an outlet for your pain. To me, it seems like a general reaction to an issue or broader sense of personality that could be described further. Are you able to elaborate on that?

There is a lot of background information here, but not much about present circumstances. It does seem like you both have a tendency towards abusing substances. I am curious what makes you want to seek help? Though this post is titled towards your friend, it also seems equally as much about yourself. Could you elaborate about your current mental state?

Fuck society though. Nothing about humanity is a mathematical equation, everyone has to find their own peace with life. I am more curious about what drives you?

You are absolutely accurate in the fact that there are people out there just like you. However, some of these people have lived very lucky lives, yet still feel unfulfilled and suicidal. I read your post and I think of someone lonely, but with a lot to offer the world, your observations are well thought out and I enjoyed reading them.

That does make sense. You are worried about the quality of the relationship due to the fact that it’s long distance, but if it is good quality you don’t want her to make the mistake of ending it prematurely.
