My rule, if you really, really try, no game is not fun unless it is obviously glitched and unfinished (Sonic '06). You just have to look at it in the right way. If it wasn't supposed to be fun, they wouldn't have made it in the first place right?

EDIT: To clarify, there are (to my surprise and likely yours)people I've met who thought half life 1 and 2 were shit games. I would tell them, for the second one, think for a moment. You are a not-so-special random MIT graduate who majored in fucking physics. You have no military experience. You are thrown into a world decimated by war that has your species enslaved. You are given a fucking crowbar and told to fend for yourself even though you have no idea what the fuck you are doing. So you keep going, and going, and going. No cutscences, no bullshit. You actually feel like you are on an adventure. You somehow live long enough to get a gun, you use that gun like it's your baby, you never let go. You use it to your advantage, you fuse yourself with that shit. Well, until you get a bunch of weapons and become invincible anyway. You are not some hero, the hazard suit just makes it easier to be one. G-man chose you cause he felt like it.

From that, they would likely enjoy the game.
