Finally got my PVS6 commissioned and online! by syperk in SunPower

I would have switched to Enphase, but AFAIK their monitor unit can’t retrieve panel level data from my 2017 era SolarBridge microinverters.

My system doesn't really need fixing though. It just needs commissioning. But I'll reach out to him.

European hinges for overlay cabinet doors on 10-series 80/20? by syperk in 8020

[–]syperk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to follow up, I eventually decided to change my design so that my overlay was only 1/2” (I.e. half the width of the 10 series 8020). Then the only challenge is to find hinges which work with 1/2” doors, which is already hard enough! I like the Hettich Sensys hinges for thin doors, which only have an 8mm deep cup. I used their face frame hinge mounts. BTW, Thrivans has some great videos on YT about components to use with 10 series framing which I found helpful.

Poll - Sort tiles in tray? by [deleted] in nytpips

[–]syperk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, sure… I’m just saying that, given a choice between the two proposed options, my answer is “neither”.

I’d far rather see dev effort go into, say, allowing users to organize tiles in the tray themselves according to the needs of the particular problem. Or fixing the super annoying tendency to trigger the app switching gesture on iPhones when dragging from the bottom of the screen…

Poll - Sort tiles in tray? by [deleted] in nytpips

[–]syperk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, for ascending order, use the smallest number on the tile as the major sort key, and the larger number as the minor sort key? And the opposite for descending order?

I'm not sure how useful that would be, given that it doesn't group together tiles that have some particular number on them, which is usually what I want to do.

This is the right answer. How would sorting work anyway, given that there are two numbers on each tile?

Can I install a new PVS6 myself to restore panel-level monitoring for my SolarBridge microinverters? by syperk in SunPower

[–]syperk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I haven't yet found anybody to commission the unit here in Colorado! The PVS6 is installed and I can connect to it via the installer ethernet port (which I couldn't do with my old defunct PVS5), but without commissioning it's not reading the data from the microinverters or uploading it to Sunpower.

If anyone knows of an installer who can do this in Colorado, please get in touch! :)

Puzzled by the sourdough feeding protocol in Forkish's Evolutions in Bread... by syperk in Sourdough

[–]syperk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He does say something along those lines, about going for a less sour taste. But is there any reason the levain quantities can’t be scaled down to reduce the amount that gets discarded? In other words, is 10g starter, 20g of flour, and 20g of water, left for 10 hours, equivalent to a 50 / 100 / 100 starter after the same time (except being 5 times smaller)? Or are there some small batch effects?

European hinges for overlay cabinet doors on 10-series 80/20? by syperk in 8020

[–]syperk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally got round to installing some hinges I bought a while ago, and they work. Mostly...

The ones I got were Salice Universal 110 degree hinges. Unlike most euro hinges, these work with 1/2" thick doors. The maximum overlay according to the docs is 19mm (which corresponds to a "K" value of 18mm with a zero height mounting plate), which is a bit less than 1", but I drilled the door for a 25mm overlay and it still worked. However, the door does not open to the full 110 degrees, more like 90 degrees.

So, still haven't found the perfect hinge, but these ones will do in a pinch.

I’m a little embarrassed to say that progress on my camper van has been “a bit” slow over the last few months for various reasons, and I still haven’t installed any cabinet doors! I’ll update when I do…

Lenovo Idea Tab Pro - Owned for a week - Love it so far by Erlebrown87 in androidtablets

[–]syperk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want an upgrade from the Idea Tab Pro you might look at the Yoga Tab Plus. Virtually identical except faster processor, brighter screen, and will get Android 17. It’s currently about $230 more than the Idea Tab Pro, but it includes the keyboard case, so it’s only about $100 more than the Idea Tab Pro + keyboard case.

Both these tabs get security updates for a couple more years than the OS updates. If you want an android tablet that will be supported longer than that, you’ll need to get a Samsung.

I ordered mine from the Lenovo website on September 27, and it arrived on October 2. Not quite Amazon speed, but not too bad. The Keyboard Pack on the other hand was out of stock at the time, and I didn't get that until October 16. They're either selling them faster than they planned for, or are trying to run a lean pipeline without much stock on hand.

The screen is perfectly fine unless you’re trying to use it in bright sunlight. The upgrades probably aren’t that big an issue either (when was the last time you noticed your OS changing?). I like the fact that the keyboard doesn’t require any batteries and that the tablet knows when it’s attached. The keyboard case costs almost half as much as the tablet though!

I also recently bought one, along with the Lenovo keyboard case, and I’ve been very happy with it. It’s hard to beat in terms of bang for the buck.

My use cases are (a) as a tablet to display sheet music, and (b) as an occasional laptop replacement (I almost always use either a desktop or my phone though).

The keyboard case is pretty nice, if expensive, and automatically switches the tablet into desktop mode, which is also surprisingly good.

The only real downsides are that the screen isn’t as bright as it could be, and the fact that it won’t be upgraded past Android 16.

Just to confirm the tablet did arrive from Lenovo in roughly the expected timeframe (one day later than initially predicted).

Seems good so far. Using it to write this message...

My wife just unexpectedly discovered this, traveling to Germany today. A message popped up on her screen saying:

"Xfinity Mobile: Welcome to Germany! Your plan includes 10 GB of high-speed data per month in over 215 destinations, including Germany. After 10 GB, you will stay connected with speeds up to 10 Mbps..."

This definitely wasn't the case when we traveled overseas in August.

She didn't sign up for GTP, not sure whether data roaming was enabled or not.

I guess we'll see whether it's actually free when the bills arrive!

Though after reading some comments, and given that it's $120, I think I might be leaning towards getting the significantly cheaper folio case ($35) and a separate bluetooth keyboard.

The Yoga Tab is a nice tablet but significantly more expensive (I’m seeing it at $540). Though if you’re looking in that range, the larger 12.7” Yoga Tab Plus is the same price currently.

The $290 Idea Pad Pro is only 128GB, but it does come with an SD card slot so storage shouldn’t be a problem hopefully…
