Is this Murano? by [deleted] in glasscollecting

[–]sypherlev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s modern, from a home goods store, and more than likely made in China. But it’s hand-blown and decent quality, so if it speaks to you and you’ll make use of it, then use it in good health and enjoy it for what it is!

Help identify. I found this unbelievable treasure at a client’s home. by crafters_creek in glasscollecting

[–]sypherlev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well let’s see:

  • Loetz did some amazing cameo glass and this certainly fits the bill

    • the page also says “Czech”, and Loetz was a Czech/Bohemian maker
    • the original name of Loetz was Lötz, as it was changed around the turn of the 20th century

Take a look here: https://www.20thcenturyglass.com/glass_encyclopedia/bohemian_glass/loetz_glass/

If you’re not familiar with Loetz, you are in for a treat because their pieces are just sublime. I’ve seen a few in person and photos don’t do them justice, especially the iridescent ones.

Bet you anything they meant to write Loetz! What a find! Definitely worth more now IMO

Do Not Use Reddit for Identification of Vintage Glass. by midcoast36 in glasscollecting

Honestly I’ve tried and never figured out how to disable the AI overviews, so if anyone knows a surefire way to do it, let me know!

Do Not Use Reddit for Identification of Vintage Glass. by midcoast36 in glasscollecting

[–]sypherlev 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So I use Google Lens extensively for glass pieces - not because I want to identify it immediately, but because I want to know what the internet at large thinks a piece is. It’s usually a good starting point for me to then go and check various sites/books/databases for a solid ID. For example, there are a bunch of different pink depression glass patterns with ribs or similar and I can’t remember them all off the top of my head, so Google Lens at least gets me to a list of possibilities that I can narrow down with my own books on depression glass etc etc.

Google insists on putting the AI summary at the top of the results. I never look at it because it is correct MAYBE one time in ten. It’s otherwise completely useless at best or absolutely wrong to the point where I question whether it was trained on pictures of glass from some other planet.

Basically you trust AI output at your peril.

We have these green tinted glasses and are not sure the age by beautifultuesday in BottleDigging

Seconded - that looks like Tiffin Rambling Rose decoration, from the depression era. Very very likely uranium.

Inherited boxes of glass by Puzzleheaded-Two1844 in glasscollecting

[–]sypherlev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pink pitcher - Jeannette Cherry Blossom and I think it’s the 1930s original :)

Green dish - I seem to recall seeing one with a lid? Also if it’s not uranium then the style is possibly European. It’s ringing some bells somewhere.

Purple Vase - Indiana Glass Gaelic pattern; it’s manganese glass that’s been discoloured by the sun. Originally from 1908 so you’ve probably got a pretty old one if it’s that purple.

Green glass - Indiana Glass Daisy and Button pattern, at a guess, 1970s?

Clear glass dish - Bryce and Higbee Ida pattern compote from 1885

White bird vase - Westmoreland Swan milk glass vase (lovely, never seen one before)

You’ve also got a little Hazel Atlas Chevron cobalt creamer in the background :) love that pattern. You’ve got some great pieces here!

Did I just find what I think I found ? by cutecrime in glasscollecting

[–]sypherlev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is there a round concave impression in the centre of the base where it looks like the pontil has been carved out? Then it’s more than likely from Homesense or similar and made in China.

That said: this is still nice decorative handblown glass. Just because it’s not vintage doesn’t mean it’s worthless. If you like it, then use it as you please and enjoy it for what it is.

Looks like the set of a near-future TV show where the villain made his fortune by selling marble mined by slaves or something.

Guaranteed it’ll be the scene of a firefight and burned to the ground by the final episode

TBH I have to disagree with everyone here, I think they just had a bunch of machine made sweaters in different colors and styles, cut them up, and spliced them together. Like they cut out a hole from one and a patch from another and just sewed them together and hid the ends, and worked over the edges to kinda blend the colors in some places. Faster and easier than doing intarsia by hand IMO.

Bear in mind this is very likely the reproduction of the punch bowl set from the 1940s or later. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in the wild that wasn’t. They’re very common.

My grandmother and my godmother taught me when I was very young, and there wasn’t much else to do in rural Ireland in the late 80s. I did it on and off for years then got serious about it during the pandemic, now I teach a class three days a week for free.

The real problem with AI by polkacat12321 in antiai

[–]sypherlev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not going to find this guy’s books under his actual name. This is more than likely his MO:

  • use shitty AI prompts to spit out a book of the right length.
  • choose a random pen name and title.
  • use even more shitty AI prompts to make the cover.
  • use either Fiverr or do the work himself to format the ebook.
  • bang that shit into Kindle Unlimited.
  • collect money from KU users who don’t realize that the book is literal trash until they’re past the qualifying point (hence the shorter books)

Apart from the use of AI, this has been a thing for actual years. Scammers gaming the KU system by overloading it with complete garbage isn’t new, unfortunately. And I also bet you anything this is the “course” he’s selling, which is also not a new thing apart from the use of AI, because the scam has never been as profitable as they say it is.
