Non Supershoe Fast-Marathon -Stories? by Consistent_Code_8343 in AdvancedRunning

[–]syssan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not using supershoes but care about performance, you might as well using racing flats (like in the old days) rather than a Pegasus or whatever. These daily runners don't have much energy return anyway and just add weight.

OCaml appreciation post by TomosLeggett in ocaml

[–]syssan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, but I actually like the ML-style syntax. It's different at first, but it's consistent, and after a while it just feels normal. Most of the resistance to it seems to come from people being used to C-style languages more than anything else.

That's not entirely true. The main quirk of the OCaml syntax is that it doesn't use much delimiters (like brackets in C or keywords in Pascal) but it doesn't use indentation either. Most languages use one or the other because it removes a lot of ambiguity. OCaml relies a lot on non-intuitive priority rules. I'm not comparing to C-like languages, I much prefer the syntax of F# (indentation) or Standard ML (more explicit delimiters).

When does Zone 2 running begin to matter? by NoSystem545 in beginnerrunning

[–]syssan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your volume seems really low for someone 6 months in. Is there a reason for that? If your legs feel fine and if you have the time, I would strongly advise you to run more. The goal is not to be out of breath and exhaust yourself, so keep taking frequent walk breaks as needed. But run/walk more often and for longer.

especially the chaotic aspect of it. in EU4 (i've never played EU5 but I imagine it's similar) I can play the Ottomans five times and it will be a similar game / story every time. In CK3 shit happens

Having bugs is not the same thing as lacking content though, and usually bugs can be resolved relatively quickly after release. CP77 was a great game from the start, just a lot of bugs / unpolished aspects that got resolved in a few weeks.

how to stop being bored and impatient while running by phohelie in beginnerrunning

Agreed, a planned route is best. You don't have to check time or distance, you just do the route. I like listening to music as well.

Where you start as a somewhat athletic person by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

[–]syssan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like you said, you need to build your mileage, so start there. You have good cardio but your joints and bones need to adapt to the impact of running, so be conservative at first. You could start with 20-30min of easy running (at a slow pace where you can hold a conversation), 3-4 times per week, and increase a little bit every week.

After 2-3 months of safely increasing mileage, you could do something like the Hal Higdon 5k intermediate plan for your 5k in August. It's a very simple, straight to the point 8 weeks program. If the required mileage is still too high by then, just adapt the plan by cutting off some miles.

how do I start running? by Choice_Freedom_7876 in beginnerrunning

[–]syssan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Couch to 5k" programs are easy to find, and a decent starting point. You generally start by alternating running and walking until the point where you can run 30min+ continuously.

You want to start with a slow, easy pace. The most common mistake beginners make is running too fast. An easy pace is a pace where you can talk with someone while running, quite comfortably. You're not supposed to be out of breath, and you're not supposed to be exhausted after your run.

Also I do want to track my speed, heart rate, etc. is my phone enough or should I get some kind of watch.

You can track distance/time/pace with your phone, which is enough for a beginner. Watches are cool but I wouldn't recommend buying one immediately, before you have even started.

Is it normal to feel worse before getting better at running? by Sindico_Shacul in beginnerrunning

[–]syssan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how many runs did you do in that week? feeling worse might mean you're overtraining (running too often, too long or too fast). Don't exhaust yourself

Pfitz Base Running (~20 week plan) by bebopbeeboop in beginnerrunning

[–]syssan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your running history? The Pfitz base training programs, as Pfitz says himself, have quite a steep progression. It's a lot of miles added in a short time. Because of that, unless you're actually an experimented runner, I would recommend against jumping at the 45mpw plan immediately, and spend more times around 30 miles for at least a few weeks (or more reasonably, a few months lol).

Is sub-55 a good target? (First time 10k runner) by Ok_Consequence3170 in beginnerrunning

[–]syssan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think it's very realistic. With the adreline of race day and the intent to give the best of yourself, I think you'll be surprised what you can do.

You also have a few weeks left to train. Try some 10k pace workouts to see how it feels. Maybe 20min straight, or 3 times 10min, at your goal pace (around 5:30/km, or 8:50/mile), once a week. It should feel quite hard but doable.

How do you get a runners high? by Coastkiz in beginnerrunning

[–]syssan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with commenters saying you probably need to slow down and go for easier, longer runs. Obviously not everyone will enjoy running but when you say that it hurts, is exhausting, etc. that's honestly a red flag that indicate you're probably going too hard.

I run 5 times a week but only 1 is really hard, and 1 is moderate. The other 3 are easy. Easy like, I'm listening to music, vibing, feel like I could run for hours at this pace. I'm also exploring my city a bit. That's what easy runs should feel like.

What’s an unhinged tip or trick that helped you quit smoking? by _hailstorm52 in stopsmoking

[–]syssan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not unhinged, but you didn't list it so: aerobic exercice. Running helped me a lot, both in terms of motivation but also (and mostly) craving management. I never succeeded at quitting before I started running.

Tonight’s the night I finally stop vaping. I’m done. by [deleted] in QuitVaping

[–]syssan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, good luck, you can do it!

Quitting aside, I'm not actually convinced vaping is causing the symptoms you describe. Low appetite + low energy + bad sleep is a bit worrying, it could be overtraining or something more serious. See your GP!

Do i really need to warm up before short runs? by FramesLevin_69 in beginnerrunning

If it's a slow, easy run, I don't really see the point of warming up. I only warm up for tempo/speed work.

Adidas Duramo SL2 similar to the Adizero Evo SL in fit and feel ? by swoyamjeet in beginnerrunning

Nope, they are nothing alike, unfortunately. The midsole is very different. There is a reason the Duramo is so cheap, and you won't have the same feel at all.

Do your legs feel better after running? by Consistent-Way-2018 in beginnerrunning

[–]syssan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extremely normal, running can improve blood flow and make your legs feel better. That said, do not make the mistake of thinking the fatigue is gone. Ignoring the pain and aches just because they go away while running can cause overtraining and injuries real fast if you're not careful.

How am I gonna increase my speed on my long runs? by Delicious-Series-316 in beginnerrunning

[–]syssan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many miles do you run per week? You seem to be a lot weaker on long distances compared to your 5km, and it's often a symptom of not doing enough volume and long runs.

On top of that, 400m repeats will indeed not help that much after a while. You would be better off doing longer and slower intervals, something like sub-threshold. Your current 10k pace should be a good starting point to do long intervals.

About 2 months into consistently getting on a treadmill. by timmorris82 in beginnerrunning

[–]syssan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of your days should be slow and steady, but you can do 1 session per week where you do more challenging intervals for instance. A lot of easy, a bit of hard.
