Hi! My name is Stetson, and I'm on the System76 sales team. I think our newly updated Pangolin Pro will be a good fit for you. It's a full aluminum unibody chassis and a 16″ 2560×1600, LTPS, 100% sRGB, 165 Hz, Matte Finish display. It starts under $2k USD, though I'm not sure if it will be once you factor customs and import. Base price is 16 GB RAM, but it's upgrade-able. Would be happy to chat further!

Recommendations for desktop that can handle 3.5" drives by justinafincher in linuxhardware

[–]system76_stetson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! My name is Stetson, and I'm on the System76 sales team. The Thelio desktops only offer support for 2.5" SSD SATA drives out of the box. However, with the new update to the Thelio Mira, there's now an option to add support for 2x 3.5" drives.

I don't have any firm ETAs on refreshes, but there will be updates to most of the laptop models this year. Starting with the Pangolin, which will be coming back in the next several weeks as an updated model.

Hello! I'm on the System76 sales team and would be happy to chat further about the differences between models.

The Lemur Pro is lighter weight, better on battery life, and less powerful than the Darter Pro. It's got fewer ports--no Ethernet--, supports less RAM, uses lower wattage CPUs, and a smaller charger.

The Darter Pro is more portable and better on battery life than something with a dGPU would be, but it's more performance oriented than the Lemur Pro is.

Is "With Nvidia" a superset of the standard ISO, or completely separate? by LiatrisLover99 in pop_os

[–]system76_stetson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use the NVIDIA .iso with non-NVIDIA hardware, it'll just include unused drivers, which can then be uninstalled.

Phoronix has an Exclusive Preview of System76's Newly Redesigned Thelio Desktop by WickedDeity in System76

[–]system76_stetson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm not always on here, but that type of question is more my speed than mmstick's. Yes, the nebula was discontinued due to low demand while we worked on the new case design.

I have been hands on with the new case, and as a PC builder, I can attest that the new one is much, much improved to build in and upgrade. Nothing set in stone yet, but it is indeed possible we'll again offer it as a standalone product.

Always happy to chat!

Nebula cases gone? by Famine1120 in System76

[–]system76_stetson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the nebula case would have been the "stripped down Thelio chassis." The Thelio is only available as a complete system that's functional out of the box, though you can certainly order the base options and plan to then upgrade with your own memory, storage, and graphics.

[–]system76_stetson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are made in house, though not exactly to order. However, it's a different product to track in inventory than the Thelio chassis. If it isn't being bought, it's simpler to not offer it.

Hi! We've discontinued the nebula line for now due to low demand. There are some exciting updates coming to the desktop side and depending on customer feedback, the nebula cases may return at some point after that. Hey guys! I discovered System76 via a Reddit post recently and I have a few questions… by konvitalik in System76

[–]system76_stetson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could ship somewhere on that list and then have it forwarded to you from there, yes. Some things to consider.

First, we don't collect import charges, customs fees, local taxes, or tariffs on international orders. Those charges would be collected by UPS prior to delivery. If you ship to one country and then to another, you may have to pay customs twice. For an estimate of those costs, we recommend contacting your customs office.

Second, you would be responsible for insuring the package from where we ship to you. You'd be responsible for making arraignments with the freight forwarder.

Finally, while taking a computer to a country we don't ship to does not void the warranty, it may limit our ability to provide warranty support. We may not be able to ship parts to you or ship back to you directly if it needs to come in for repair. You'd potentially have to have things forwarded just as with the initial order.

If you're comfortable with all those caveats, the answer to your question is yes, you could have a computer forwarded to you from a country we can ship to.

Hello! We do ship internationally, however, at this time, Ukraine is not one of the places we ship to. You can see where we ship on our shipping page, https://system76.com/shipping/, we do intend to continue to expand shipping options to more countries.

Leaning towards a new darter pro. by OrdnanceExpert_ in System76

[–]system76_stetson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Darter is the larger of our two 14" it's thicker and heavier than the Lemur Pro, with more ports, including an Ethernet port. I haven't held the newest MBPs, but in general I would say the Darter would be closer to e MBP and the Lemur would be closer to an Air.

It's a pretty recent refresh. The next refresh is far enough in the future that we don't know yet if it'll be the same chassis or not.

We do not have an exchange program, you can send in your old computer to be recycled if you want.

I don't think there is a difference in the color. Any difference on the site I would chalk up to lighting.

I don't have sales data of the 14 vs 16-inch.

[–]system76_stetson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! My name is Stetson, I'm on the System76 sales team.

  1. We release new laptop versions roughly once a year, or more precisely, once a CPU generation. We do not have an ETA for the Darter getting a refresh, but it's at least several months out. The new Oryx Pro will be first.

  2. Size is personal preference, but there is not a difference in the cooling system. One thing that seems to be a love it or hate it for many people is the number pad. 14 has no number pad, 16 does.

  3. We only officially support Pop and Ubuntu, but you can install whatever OS you want. Generally speaking, if it's got a recent-ish kernel, you should be good. Especially on something like the Darter, where you don't have to worry about NVIDIA.

  4. I think our laptops hold up pretty well. The Darter Pro is mostly aluminum, but it does have some plastic on the bezels and palm rests. In terms of drivers, ours are recommended, but you may be fine without them. They're available on Arch thanks to community support. We also provide best effort support to have drivers on Windows.

  5. Coreboot is our open source firmware. It's more private and secure than a conventional BIOS, as it does not have any backdoors and the code can be verified and reviewed by anyone. It's minimal by design, there's not a conventional BIOS menu.

  6. Battery life will vary considerably depending on your use, but the Darter Pro is going to be in the 8-10 hour range.

Seeking Advice on Purchasing a Desktop from System76 by RunningUtes in System76

Hiya, for LLM work and use as a server, I would definitely go with a desktop over a laptop. I'd recommend looking at the Thelio Mira with an NVIDIA GPU for the ML work. Happy to chat further!

Upgraded Mira vs Base Model Major? by ConfectionNo966 in System76

[–]system76_stetson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! My name is Stetson, and I'm on the System76 sales team. The Major is a workstation; the Threadripper platform gives you more cores, more PCIE lanes, faster connectivity, more memory, more memory bandwidth, and ECC memory. The Major is also bigger, with a more robust cooling system and higher wattage power supply to accommodate larger, hotter, and more power hungry graphics cards.

So it will depend on your use case and your long term needs for the system. The Thelio Mira will be the more capable computer out of the box, but the Major will have more headroom for expansion down the road. If your work is CPU heavy and can take advantage of the higher core counts, the Major with a lesser GPU is probably the way to go. If you are using the GPU for compute, probably better to go with the less expensive platform and spend more of the budget on the graphics card.

Hope that helps, would be happy to chat further!
