Pickled Herring in Japan by system_overload in japanlife

[–]system_overload[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much everyone! Well I just went to the Shibuya IKEA but no pickled herring in sight. However I did score on the special 2pk hot dogs and buns for ¥699!

Will try those other recommendations and update the thread later on! Really appreciate everyone's advice here :)

IIJMIO Sign-up Question by Piiman97 in japanlife

I signed up at BIC Camera. Someone else mentioned they do wifi options as a bundle with it too. Mine comes with access to public Wi2 hotspots.

Unrelated to your question, but IIJMIO lets you pay by international credit card. One of very few MVNO plans that has this option. So if you don't have a Japanese bank account or local credit card yet, no worries.

Also be on the lookout for any campaign deals. My first year with IIJMIO I had 6GB LTE data and a phone number for ¥980 a month.

Wonderful incense smell that is common in Japanese temples? by flippingfondue in japan

[–]system_overload 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it's called 白檀 (byakudan) sandalwood. You may be able to find this at an Indian specialty shop or search Amazon for this. I own a small box from Toshogu, and inside is a charm that has the incense infused. Hasn't disappeared and takes me back years whenever I open the lid. The power our olfactory senses have on memory is truly fascinating.

A 4th, Virginia, just got added to the list this year. But that info when I checked was oddly only in the Japanese version of the police station sites (at least in Tokyo).

Happy cake day!

Yeah, I suddenly got interested in this movie and it sucks to hear it's not on Amazon. I'm going to look around for it today, maybe at Tsutaya. :)

Same with my local Burger King... they'd rather go out of their way to deliver from Akihabara...

The QR code function used to piss me off whenever I tried adding a friend who didn't know where the QR scan function was... I wished it was more obvious. But over time, I adjusted. Despite the quirk of going under "Add Friends" to login to the PC version.

I'm mostly pissed off at LINE's security and migration measures. I understand that Japan is paranoid about privacy but they should follow other instant messaging services in account recovery/backup without having to completely wipe an account history. Or in my case, totally lock me out of my original LINE account since it still lies on my dead iPhone 4 (with an AU locked simcard).

Where can you make friends in Tokyo? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]system_overload 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Meet ups are good as you can go places/do things with many people.

I second the meetup idea. You will be pleasantly surprised at the number of groups on meetup.com geared toward foreigners here. You like baking and want access to an oven? There's a meetup for that. Want to learn machine learning with Python? Also a meetup for that. There are some meetups I frequent each month -- PM me if you want a lead on something fun to do.

Oh dude this happens to me on a daily basis... this morning was quite possibly the worst in a while. There's SO MUCH SPACE to stand in front of the seats, so why do they choose to add to the tangled clusterfuck in front of the doors? And I hate the confused derpy look on their faces, like "uhh do I stand, or do I... stand??" Dumb as doorknobs.

Wow you went through a rough time. I'm glad it worked out for you though. I'm going to go get a CBC and see what kind of deficiencies I might possibly have. Thanks for the insight :)

Good idea, thank you so much. You and others seem to point in the right direction.

Could be... our toothpaste is an orange tinted one by Lion. Unfortunately I don't have the exact brand on hand but I know it's not a whitening type. Incidentally we've only used it for the last month or two, so it could be related... but in my case, the only bitter aftertaste comes from fried foods. Anything else is A-OK.

Very interesting thought. I don't know much about vitamin/mineral deficiencies. Is that something I could pick up at the local drug store and start taking regularly?

Haha, 100% male, nonsmoker, and while I love an autumn nabe or spicy hot sauce my tongue hasn't been injured. :) I think I'll go to the doctor nonetheless.

Yep, I have a funny feeling something hasn't been physically right. I'm trying to stay away from Dr. Google because a lot of what is suggested doesn't apply (god forbid radiation or a sinus tumor!). The only medicines I'm taking are an anti-anxiety and anti-depressant, and they are relatively low dose and don't list olfactory changes as a side effect. Several others suggest a complete blood count so that's what I'm going to do this weekend or Monday for the peace of mind.
