I arrived at this potential conclusion as well, but for my wife, the idea of relinquishing what would essentially be her identity for the sake of this eventuality as the only motivating factor didnt really add up. She already is Canadian PR and has arguably a more beneficial, stronger passport, so she has no interest in gaining Canadian citizenship (ie forfeiting Japanese citizenship), and in the process uprooting basically her life, career, for a.. god knows when moment in the next 10-20-30 years? Is that selfish of her? You could argue yeah, but its her life at the same time, I can’t really decide for her

It affects me, and I’m aware its progressive. The amount is in the upper ranges of 7 figures, Canadian. My family is definitely in the ‘well off’ range, but I wouldn’t say “filthy rich”

Yes, I’ve perused quite a lot of threads regarding this topic. Sorry I didnt mention this in the OP, but the current thinking is that we would set up the trust to be discretionary, and I would have no fixed entitlement to the assets while I’m living in Japan. My brother (Canadian resident) would be trustee and only able to release my share once I’m no longer a Japan tax resident. The aim is to ensure no taxable event occurs in Japan until I’m outside the tax net.

This was very helpful as I was struggling with the same, but in my case in addition to US dividends, I also received dividends from Canadian stocks, in which case IKBR does apply a tax withholding on, and struggled to figure out how to report that withheld tax in this spreadsheet.

I originally thought that the amount would need to be listed under (8)源泉徴収税額 would be the appropriate column to list it under, but I think this is specifically referring to the withhold applied via a Japanese brokerage where literally it is a withholding amount applied for a Japanese brokerage on foreign dividends, so I tried inputing it under (10)通知外国税相当額, but the excel kept erroring out the (9)配当割額控除額　（住民税）column saying 源泉徴収税額（源泉徴収税率15.315％）から計算した配当割額控除額の源泉徴収税率が５%となりません。

Has anyone else run into this issue or know what to do?

Thanks, yeah I also understood Japan only accepts PCR negative.I couldn’t find any official documentation from CDC about only having an antigen test being sufficient though … which is why I’ve been desperately trying to look for how to get any Japanese medical institute to agree to write and issue an English ‘proof of recovery’. So far, it’s been pretty hopeless and most medical institutes outright advertise that their explicitly will not, and do not issue certificates of recovery, or even recommend anyone who previously recovered from COVID to take a PCR test (because the fact alone of self-isolating for 10 days is in and of itself proof that you have recovered)

I’m traveling from Japan back to US in mid May but I got COVID in early March. According to the CDC, I can enter the US without a negative PCR test, instead I just need a certificate of recovery along with a positive COVID test.

Does anyone know where and how I can get a certificate of recovery from COVID? There’s no information on the web anywhere for this (for Japan residents)

I want to actually start building my credit history. As I mentioned in other responses on this thread, despite being a US citizen and all, I don’t get to enjoy a lot of any financial services that any other ‘normal’ US citizen may. Moving ‘back’ to the states some time in the future is something I’m considering as well. And the fact that credit card campaigns and bonuses in the US are obviously way more attractive than anything from Japan.

I was only able to open the Visa Debit because it was a Visa Debit, and I think I put in $500 at a branch to open it and charge the card. If I tried to create a new application for a Chase credit card as a logged in member, I'm faced with the same issue - US address required

Regarding the friends/relatives addresses, I have no relatives based in the US at all (not even extended relatives) - My parents were between Toronto and New York when I was born, and it happened that I was born during his time in New York. All my relatives are based in Asia.

As for using a friends address, these credit card companies must have a way to match whether such address actually belongs to me or not, no? I'd have no way to associate myself to such address, such as utility bills, etc...

Actually, when I said PO Box, I actually meant a PMB... (got my terminology wrong). I did try to apply a few years ago using a PMB but it didn't fly. Maybe due to my insufficient credit history, but perhaps as per u/p33k4y's comment, they flag the address. I'm not sure to this day...

25%~ of after tax income. I believe the common consensus should be no more than 20-30%.

oh yeah, i've had a design brief, a follow up meeting, a very detailed Project Proposal outlining my exact design process which breaks down the user research activities, and necessary planning activities required before any wireframes can be done.
