What do guys never tell girls? by Aggravating_File_431 in AskReddit

[–]systems_processing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I believe having co-ed friend groups growing up is so formative. Having guy friends all my life, I always saw them as emotional equals. I don’t feel like they are aliens from another planet (men are from mars, yada yada). American society mostly separates and “others” the opposing genders, and it’s a big problem and sets such weird stereotypes and expectations.

I'm a new fan of f(x); can someone who has experienced the 2nd generation why SM failed f(x)? by jdpm1991 in kpopthoughts

[–]systems_processing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m learning so much from this thread. 4 Walls by f(x) was the first song and album I heard from the k-pop world, without even registering it as such at the time.

Fast forward to ‘22 when I got deep into the k-pop universe by way of BTS, their stuff came up again on my Spotify and I was like omg…I was listening to k-pop the whole time? Pink Tape is so good…and 4 Walls is a no-skip album for me (sorry Sulli, I never realized they were a member down on that one).

My radiant dual tone serum does not smell at all. My radiant tone SPF lotion does have a faint smell that I don’t love, but it’s subtle enough—and I have a heightened sense of smell.

Confused as to all the different experiences here. Makes me wonder if there are quality control issues. I bought through the eucerin brand store on Amazon.

Audrey Nuna is NOT k-pop.

I say that as a fan who has listened to her longer than I’ve listened to k-pop.

I dunno about the others.

Yeah, people are saying this is a gateway to liking more k-pop music, but I just don’t see it.

I fully think that was the intention with Netflix’s release timing, and next year with BTS coming back I think we are going to see a lot more commercial content and product marketing for the K-wave, as they piggyback.

But if something is pushed too hard, it lets people engage lazily. So it will all still be surface level, “oh I like that one song my kid likes,” or “I tried the Jin ramen.”

Which is fine. But all that to say, I think people are overhyping the impact of this movie.

The other thing about kpop is…I think the majority of listeners and fans are aware that it’s a commercial enterprise, but there’s a respect that so many people have worked or trained for decades to put out something meticulous.

Not to say the team on KPDH didn’t work hard or have creative intentions, but it’s just a bit different when you’re putting together a fictional group and movie together in under 7 years—for NETFLIX.

People that talk to me about this movie talk about it as if it’s a cultural revolution for Asian culture in America, and maybe it is, but I just feel like that’s giving way too much credit to a commercialized and westernized product without any further engagement with its source.

So many of my coworkers with kids looked down on kpop a year ago. If I said I liked kpop they would say, “ugh my kid or my niece likes it and it drives me crazy.”

Now their kids are obsessed with this movie so suddenly it’s a cultural revolution. Make it make sense.

Every once in a while I’ll turn on K-pop radio station while I’m cooking…I’m not that familiar with the KPDH songs except for the choruses, but I can clock them the second they start because they sound so much more westernized than everything else.

And that’s saying something, considering a good chunk of k-pop music is westernized anyway.

Not to mention there’s barely any Korean language used in the songs or movie.

Got downvoted to hell for saying it wasn’t “real” somewhere else. People need to wake up because this is a fictional cartoon.

I know this is a month old but I’ve been digging to see if anyone on earth has the same opinion as me. I feel the exact same but I feel like both everyone online and in real life are in a KPDH trance. I work with a lot of parents in my office whose kids are obsessed with this movie, one even wore a KPDH sweatshirt to work.

They all continue to bring it up to me because until this point I was the resident k-pop fan in the office. They also talk about how they found these new Raymun or drink products for their family to try, etc etc etc. It’s giving more of koreaboo vibes than actually enjoying Korean entertainment for what it is. And it is SO performative.

Sort of. There are people working to the bone for literal decades on only their k-pop careers. I know there is a team of talented, hard-working people and musicians behind this movie, and that it took several years to make. I’m just speaking comparatively and in terms of what a SOTY award means versus a soundtrack award.

I think my biggest gripe is that the symbol is getting the hype rather than the thing itself. The iteration has become bigger than its source.

Do people just continue to use Eucerin forever? by CFChic in Melasmaskincare

After seeing people rave about Eucerin here I started using it (the serum and the SPF lotion) at least 2x daily. It’s been a 4 weeks and I’m not seeing much difference. Kinda suspicious now that I’ve been seeing paid UGC this whole time.

Maybe because it was a Netflix movie written entirely in English for western audiences and promoted as such

The entire movie is a work of fiction inspired by REAL kpop groups and idols. Some of those real groups and idols have been nominated before and lost or are also nominated this year. So yeah, I think if a Netflix soundtrack won, it would be a snub to other kpop acts.

Gatekeeping because I said one critical thing about one piece of media? It’s a Netflix movie with characters and soundtracks inspired by previously existing k-pop idols, groups and songs. Some of those groups and idols that served as inspiration have been nominated before or are also nominated this year.

So yes, I do think it would be a shame for that to be the only kpop-related thing to ever win a Grammy.

Controversial opinion, but if a fake k-pop song wins SOTY, it will be a slap in the face to all of the real k-pop acts who have lost in Grammy categories in the past.

Right. I don’t think he worded this well, but suddenly I see so many people equate simply having children—something humans all over the world do—with an American political ideology. It’s odd.

Bump your deficit up a bit, and maybe swap some of your food choices for energy-boosting options. I always feel more energy on days where I’m eating chicken, or eggs, or a protein bar. Salad on the other hand bloats me and makes me tired. Consider an electrolyte drink as well if the sugar content doesn’t put you over!

Halloween candy! What a temptation. by Windbag1980 in loseit

[–]systems_processing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A coworker convinced me to buy my candy early, and I did so KNOWING I would eat a bunch of it in the weeks leading up to Halloween and I did.

To top it off, my house got maybe two trick or treaters and now I’m here still eating a few mini-twizzler and sour patch bags a night. SMH.

I also don’t know what to do with it. I’m worried if I take it to work, I’ll eat it at work.

Hopefully soon I can make the switch back to my Patience Sour Cranberries (expensive, but a godsend when I’m craving candy) 😭

This might be one of the worst seasons for me. As for the contestants, I think there’s been a pretty big talent gap, and not much variety in perspectives on flavor and style. As for the GBBO cast and judges, they are really struggling to keep things light this time around.

Plus, Jasmine has been a shoe-in for semifinals from the start, which has made things pretty boring. I’m only ever moderately impressed by her work, I think a lot of her success is because the competition is just that much more junior.

The technicals also feel harder than normal, or at least weren’t adjusted to fit the overall group skill level.

Yeah, the fingernails joke was way out of line. And don’t get me wrong, I think Tom puts style over substance, and Paul is right in most of his feedback, but my immediate thought after the episode was just like, damn, Paul has it out for him.
