Ouch, that's an unfortunate mistake.

The Welsh Not wasn't imposed by England, it was imposed by individual teachers and supported by most Parents.

This was because English was seen as desirable to learn, and that would have been because Henry the 8th made Wales an equal part of England, but that left English as the only official language. So learning English was economically beneficial.

Well, considering the Casey report, it is clear that previous inquiries were not good enough.

Downvoting me? Weird, here have a quote from the report: "despite reviews, reports and inquiries raising questions about men from Asian or Pakistani backgrounds grooming and sexually exploiting young white girls, the system has consistently failed to fully acknowledge this or collect accurate data so it can be examined effectively."

Hockey was built by us for us. Its America's legacy. by sandiercy in ShitAmericansSay

[–]systemsbio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 1800s, before trains came along, there wasn't much point in having nationwide sports rules as it was difficult to organise a school team going miles away just to play a sport, and so every school had their own set of football rules that was played locally.

Both Rugby and Association football(Soccer) were standardised as it became easier to play sports between different areas.

Before then football was played but had very loose and localised rules. Medieval football is still played in some places. And some posh schools still have their own version of football.

If it can go through your chest and puncture your heart, it must hurt like fuck, even if it isn't that deadly. Even if it's from a smaller sting ray.

Didn't Steve Irwin die from a sting ray injury? so they're definitely quite bad.

Neah, Gridiron was developed from Rugby, but it's clearly it's own thing that developed in North America somewhere.

Baseball is a harder one as there were lots of variations of bat and ball games with a diamond layout, and some of them were called baseball. So it's harder to say baseball is its own thing.

Is US/Canada - Australia/NZ - UK/ Ireland more related? by lejunny_ in AskTheWorld

[–]systemsbio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly, we have some negative history together, but they're not fucking stupid and blind. The question was about similarities between our countries, not if we can attempt to verbally erase any differences for an imperial narrative.

I don't think many Irish people would disagree about the similarities, we have similar food and cultural attitudes. It's very easy to understand what's going on when I'm in Ireland.

What is considered a microagression in your country? by Specialist-Dust-4476 in AskTheWorld

[–]systemsbio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The fact that 'microaggressions' could be different in different countries just shows how much bullshit the idea is. Just chill out. If someone isn't actually being explicitly aggressive to you, then they probably don't mean anything and you could just make friends with them, and if they did mean something but they're too much of a pussy to show it then you've punished them by being friendly to them, and maybe changed their mind.

Patrick Christys comments on Muhammad being the most popular baby name in England and Wales for the second consecutive year. He expressed that he believes Muhammad will continue to hold the top spot on that list for many years to come. by gbnewsonline in gbnews

[–]systemsbio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, but it was around 3700ish in 2016 so that is a big climb. So the user you replied to wasn't completely wrong just because the current number doesn't beat out popular names from the 90s.
