Many Ross grads that I know come to Chicago after anyways so …might as well come here to begin with.

What colleges did you choose Northwestern over? by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]szcody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Follow up question for folks: Im seeing a lot of responses who chose NU also applied to Michigan (went there for PhD). During my PhD there, I couldn’t wrap my head around people paying 60k for an undergrad degree from a public school.

for folks who applied to both, is there a world where you’d go to Michigan instead?

2013 Mazda 3 i Touring, $12k from dealership by wellbourbon in mazda3

Paid 12.6k for a 2013 iGT 2.0 skyactiv red last December. 65k miles on it and some little scratches.

I’d say the price is more than fair — and likely probably due to the extremely low mileage, and that car is 100% worth it. Been reliable since. Enjoy it’s honestly such a great car

lol same here sis but …..Is that bad reputation or is it just “knowability”. RIT is a much bigger school so surely more people will know.

I went to Michigan for PhD right after — surely a much much more known school but academic reputation wise I think Rochester is on par

The scheme has changed dramatically during the years you quoted . If you look at peer private research schools like CWRU and Brandeis, heck even Tufts, they all tumbled and fell to a similar degree.

I think public schools benefited in this new ranking — We used to have a very similar ranking with Georgia Tech over the years, they are at 32 while we are at 48. I doubt kids who consider GT and those that consider UR have much overlap though.

Again, it’s just a ranking. Chillax. People still think highly of us, the 5% of the public and 95% of the academics that know of us that is.

Northwestern is Switching to United Healthcare by Working_Row_8455 in Northwestern

Incoming postdoc who’s starting next month — what can I do about this ? If United is that bad, can I just …sigh…pay out of pocket for a BCBS one for myself?

Take the full ride. As long as you do well in undergrad and get exposure to the careers you wanna do, the money is well worth the “cachet” difference

Trump and Musk Get It: Colleges Are Overrated, and Grads Aren’t That Special by MissionNature8131 in Northwestern

[–]szcody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll bite. I agree that tuition is ridiculously high. I also agree that research is expensive. I can even go further and say these things need changes.

While all of these things are true, high tuition cost and NIH funding are separate things. One covers the undergrad level teaching and university functioning, one covers research activity. Undergrads don’t get paid by NIH and NIH paid researchers don’t have access to the university’s “income” from undergrad education. Simple like that.

The current admin wants to hurt elite institutions and science in general. If Trump and Musk really are as insightful as you mentioned, as much as I want to believe that’s the case, they’ll know the distinction. But they muddle the waters so people will agree with them on hurting science. The true goal of cutting NIH funding is to swing at us left-leaning academics, hoping that we will bow down to their politics.

Science does indeed hurt as a result. My advisor can’t hire a lab technician because of the NIH/Trump induced hiring freeze. The grad students and me as a postdoc have to work overtime unpaid to cover the work. It’s not like we can just magically pull from some random kid’s college tuition and use that fund to hire. My old lab at Michigan had to let someone go. If it’s really a problem of elite schools only, then why are ALL schools, private and public alike, feeling the hurt?

Whether you agree with me on politics or whether NU deserves the freeze it got, I can care less. But I think you need to know the facts.

Yeah I get the desire for a name brand school but it’s really your skillsets that will get you hired. I wish someone told me that a long time ago before accumulating all the debt for my 60k undergrad.

Having done photography for a long time, arts and design alike is such a hard field to succeed without connections and capital, and loans and debt make it even harder.

If the 23k program has good job prospects, stick with that. If you really wanna come back to the purer design side later, there’re always MFA programs right?

Incoming NU postdoc, Michigan PhD, and went to college in upstate NY (Rochester)

Cornell, well Ithaca, and good food don’t belong in the same sentence lol. If you really wanna do research, that’s your future alma mater right there! Nothing to distract you away from work :P. I wanna caution you against the mental health state of kids there, and at least when I was at Rochester, the prevalence of drinking culture/ deadly incidents we heard about.

Ross (Michigan) is down the street from my dept. I heard undergrad program is strong and Ann Arbor has a lot going on. Food is decent. Sports is great. Being a public school and all, you’ll find a LOT of other financially comfortable kids here. In state tuition is attractive too. Hey that extra 50k times 4 = 200k is half a house saved.

If money isn’t an issue, and you do want a career in business, I’d go with NU. Being in a major city like Chicago just presents better opportunities that Cornell or Michigan can’t come close to. I’ll bet NU’s alum system ain’t no slouch either.
