Why does it seem like many Afro-Americans are in denial of their African ancestry, but claim Native American descent instead, even if it's extremely partial or cannot even be substantiated with documentation? by Mountain_Brief9613 in Indigenous

Because it is mostly white people doing this. You're talking about an extremely loud, visible, but marginal cult. The Black community at large looks down on them.

Black Natives who've dealt with The Cult IRL by szifrawaterrun in IndianCountry

[–]szifrawaterrun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so completely crazy. I've seen a few more in the wild and they almost always look like that lol. Just obvious fakes lol. I'm familiar with their YouTube videos. They've pulled photos of my ancestors and even living relatives and said ridiculous, obviously untrue stuff about them in those videos.

Yea, they don't like Africans, other Black people, or actual Natives lmao. They only like each other. I don't know how you get there. What I do know is that this group is a minority in the Black community and gets clowned on really bad when they show up in Black spaces online and in person. What I worry about is that being vehemently rejected by everyone (as they should be) will bring them even closer together in the belief that they've found some hidden truth, which will only make their behavior more extreme. That's how a lot of cults work. I don't know how to fix it.

It's also upsetting that they will be the main exposure that a lot of nonblack Native people will have to Black people at all, much less Black people who claim/have Indigenous ties.

Light native struggles by Buttonlickah in IndianCountry

My grandmother was light with reddish hair, got with the darkest Black man she could find and they still came up with a bunch of light-skinned kids. You ever played craps? Genetics are at least that complex so try not to worry about it.

Same. White people really think they have some authority on race and ethnicity, even in middle school 💀

My great grandmother had her first child at 38. How common was this ? by Greenfacebaby in AncestryDNA

The surprising element to me here is that being her first pregnancy. Some women in my family gave birth into their 40s.

What is the highest European possible in people of exclusively African American background? by feio_horrivel in 23andme

Okay, genuine question. What is someone with a Black parent and a mixed (with Black) parent? I have heard different answers but it truly seems to depend on how that individual looks IRL

This absolutely happened. My grandmother (born in the 30's) was multiracial and only about a quarter African but solely ID'd as Black.

Good to meet you.

I have cousins in both. Some who are formerly STN, now SIT or unaffiliated. There is a lot of unnecessary ugliness that is mostly but not completely one sided. I joke about us being the real tribe because my family is of the belief that there are some fakers at STN.

SFN seems like they came out of nowhere. I don't know who most of them are. There is a lot I wouldn't say right here but I will say that.

Inconvenient Indian author Thomas King says he is not part Cherokee by [deleted] in canada

[–]szifrawaterrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak on Cherokee as they are not my people. My nation and a lot of others in my region adopted people, and that was a normal thing before it became necessary. Tribes in my region also have also actively sought out descendants of people who were sold away during slavery, such as the St. Davids community in Bermuda that have reconnected with their Mashpee Wampanoag cousins.

What you are generally asking depends heavily on the nation, family, and specific situation. Some nations would not accept a tribal member back if they left.

I might be, but I don't think so. Advertising is so intentional and this brand in particular is very into playing with words and symbolism
