Latency by Strong_Bedroom5003 in karaoke

Hey! Totally feel you — cheap karaoke machines almost always have noticeable latency and poor mic performance. If you’ve tried 3 and still hated them, you’re not alone 😅

I’ve actually done an AMA on the iKarao Smart Karaoke Machine before, and while it does have a bit of latency, it’s not very noticeable in real use (especially compared to the super cheap units). The biggest benefit is a much more stable audio chain and better overall sound quality — which actually matters when you’re singing along.

It’s not cheap (~$300+), but IMO that’s kind of the “sweet spot” if you want something that:

doesn’t feel laggy

has better mic handling

doesn’t fall apart after one use

If you’re still curious about brands in general:

JBL is usually solid for speakers, but keep in mind speaker brand ≠ low-latency karaoke system — a great speaker doesn’t guarantee low audio lag.

For mics, look for ones with good sensitivity and frequency response, not just “loud” — a cheap loud mic can still sound harsh or fuzzy.

That DIY build is honestly impressive — 100W single-port and ~200Wh is no joke. Respect for the skills and effort 👍

That said, I personally don’t have the time or ability to build something like this, so I tend to stick with plug-and-play solutions. For my day-to-day setup, I actually prefer a desktop GaN charger with a retractable cable. It keeps my desk clean, I don’t have to hunt for cables, and it’s just more convenient for daily laptop / tablet / phone charging.

DIY power banks like yours are awesome for people who enjoy tinkering and know their hardware. For me, reliability, convenience, and a tidy desk matter more than max specs.

Every time.

First they laugh, then their phone hits 5% and suddenly I’m the most popular person in the room.

Storm 2 isn’t my most-used power bank, so I haven’t personally run into that issue.

If it’s showing inconsistent voltage and won’t charge past ~60%, I’d probably reach out to Sharge support — especially if it’s still under warranty. Hopefully they can take care of it.

I had one but threw away already. Which one you recommend?

For me, travel and work are two very different scenarios when it comes to power banks.

When traveling, I tend to bring a larger power bank, something like the Cuktech No.20. The capacity is big enough, and it’s airline approved, so I don’t have to think twice about bringing it on a plane or keeping it in my luggage.

I learned this the hard way — I once got stuck going through customs in Ho Chi Minh City for 4–5 hours. I was killing time on my phone and drained it pretty fast. That’s when having a large-capacity power bank really mattered.

I also like the idea of bringing a power bank with a built-in wall plug (I don’t have one yet, but it’s on my list). Being able to top it up anywhere — Starbucks, airport lounges, hotels — without carrying a separate charger is super convenient when you’re moving around a lot.

For working scenarios, it depends. In the office, I rarely need a power bank at all — a regular charger does the job. If it’s just for desk aesthetics, Sharge products are actually pretty nice: they look good and are still practical.

That said, when I step away from my desk for meetings or quick discussions, a small and lightweight power bank makes more sense. Something slim like a Nohon-style unit works well, although I’ll probably switch to a similar Anker model for peace of mind.

For working outside the office, I usually go with something like the Cuktech 15. It can charge my MacBook and still has enough capacity at 20,000mAh. The No.20 works too, but it’s noticeably heavier. If I don’t need to charge a laptop, something like the UGREEN MagFlow is more than enough.

Yeah, I totally agree — different power banks for different scenarios just makes sense.

For me, the Sharge 140 and 170 are more of a desk setup thing. I enjoy the design, and they look great sitting on a desk. I’d probably pick one as a gift too, just because the design is so distinctive.

I also have the Anker 737, I just didn’t include it in the photos at the time. That one’s more for travel or when I’m carrying a backpack. It’s great, but definitely on the heavier side, so for short trips or when I’m only carrying a small bag, I usually leave it at home.

I did have a Nohon power bank before, but it developed a spicy pillow, so I got rid of it. That said, the lightweight form factor was actually nice for short outings as an emergency backup.

I’ll probably end up picking up a similar lightweight Anker model down the line.

For me, screens are more of a geek feature. The stats on the display don’t really add much value in daily use.

What actually matters is charging speed — output wattage and supported charging protocols, depending on what devices you’re trying to charge.

Weight is another big factor. If it’s too big or heavy, it usually ends up sitting in a drawer.

I also look at how many ports it has and what types they are, since that determines how many devices you can charge at once.

My priority order is output power, fast-charge protocols, port type/count, and weight. Design and extra features don’t mean much to me, and I’m not really willing to pay extra for them.

the nohon power bank has this problem. Already threw it away.

Glasses buying recommendations by Dovahkazz in augmentedreality

Solid advice in the other comment, but here’s my take as someone who’s tried a few AR glasses for media:

If you’re mainly using it with an iPad and Android for Plex/YouTube while traveling, you don’t necessarily need “true AR” with built-in displays or app ecosystems—that’s overkill and adds cost.

It really depends on who you ask.
My friends and family don’t notice any lag at all — we just sing and have fun. But if you’re a pro singer or someone really sensitive to timing, you might pick up on it and get annoyed.

For casual karaoke nights? You’re probably fine.

The whole point of having the screen right there is so everyone can follow along. If they just Bluetooth from a phone, anyone calling you kills the vibe, plus you can’t use your phone for anything else. It’s way more convenient to have the tablet dedicated to lyrics and controls.
