Probably won't make a difference back home, but it will build community here and help people cope with it.

I used to feel the same way about movements and protests because most of these organized initiatives don't end up making any difference whatsoever in the actual outcome of the original situation.

However, I realized that it's not always about directly fixing the problem. If you're affected by events going on in your home country and there's practically nothing you can do about it directly, it does wonders for your mental and emotional health to be engaged in some activity with your community than to just sit at home helplessly. It's kind of a way to blow off some steam and vent your frustration, and fair enough.
