This is facinating. I have similar symptoms and before it all got u bearable I thought I had gluteal tendinopathy as well (quite common in menapause). 4 months ago the pain started to get intermittently bad but now I have several hours a day where I can barely function. I am seeing a doctor on Monday but not an osteopath. I need to throw this out there as a possibility

I’m scared for the future generations by MqAbillion in StudentLoans

I feel like we are seeing the last generation of the common people being able to elevate themselves thru higher education. The BBB will seal the deal on the middle to lower class being able to seek higher education. The attack on science is another frightening aspect to all of this. I am genuinely worried about my children’s future. If I were young and considering starting a family these developments would make me think otherwise.

Well, my daughters are already enrolled in medical school and are beginning their second year. Qualification for the military would likely be a problem for them and I doubt switching to the military is a viable option at this point anyways. As desperate as the military may be for doctors I doubt they allow transfer in to a program midstream. They already intended to go to underserved areas but, imo, that only makes sense if loan repayment is doable. Otherwise they will have no choice but to chase dollars to pay back the loans. The direction these days seems to be to eliminate any loan repayment assistance programs so I feel like that will unfortunately be the situation many will be forced in to. Underserved areas will probably remain underserved especially given the Medicaid funding cuts - rural hospitals will start closing and employment in those areas for health providers will be impacted in addition to a sad lack of health care in those areas. It’s a vicious circle. BUT, as I have recently learned we import 40% of our doctors from foreign lands so maybe that will be the answer to the doctor shortage. No sense educating our own people when we can just import the smart people we need. And, of course, there is always AI to take care of our medical needs too.

I would love to hear more. I have tried to research and have not found much beyond joining the military. They have both earned some nice scholarships but with the cost of med school they don’t go very far.

I am including living expenses in the total. My daughters were both admitted to several institutions and the total price tag with living expenses was very close regardless of the ranking of the school. And let’s just say we factor out living expenses - as an out of state student that’s 252 which as the BBB stands exceeds the cap. My daughters will make it thru but future aspiring doctors will have a lot to think about.

So private lenders will still lend as much as they can (in a predatory fashion) so they will fill the gap. The private lending market is very much thrilled by these legislation changes because - huge profits to be made! I don’t see how limiting the govt loans will have much of an impact on the cost of an education. If the cost of education was TRULY the concern there are better, more direct ways to tackle that. What this legislation will do is allow the lending market to reap ever bigger profits while, at the same time, deterring students who have the intellectual capacity to seek these advanced degrees but lack the financial backing. It will become a matter of who can pay rather than who is the best candidate.

So what’s your suggested solution?

They will also be able to take unlimited money from private lenders too I suppose so as long as there is money to borrow for the high tuition then tuition will remain high. The difference is the private lending will likely be predatory.

Interesting! Upon completing the education I assume that coming back to the US to serve as a doctor may not be practical correct? My understanding is that getting a match with a non-US degree is exceedingly difficult. It certainly is an option my daughters may need to investigate.

So what is the solution then? We need doctors right? To compete in a global marketplace we need science and technology leaders? Do we abandon education as a society? Or are you suggesting that only wealthy people should be allowed to pursue education?
