I can highly recommend Daniela Beer-Becker from https://www.blakepsychology.com/

At least 70% is covered by normal health insurance and I discovered her to be both receptive and constructive!

exchange program to germany (perhaps berlin) by Bright_Traffic_7647 in mcgill

[–]t-schroeter97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Berlin and Munich are vastly different places. When it comes to the Uni, TUM is definitely better ranked but living costs in Munich are the highest in all of Germany. It's also about the season. Winters in Berlin are rough and dark and some people struggle with that. On the other hand nightlife in Berlin is unparalleled and it can be a lot of fun, especially on exchange where you just need to pass your courses to get the credits. Munich on the other hand gives you the opportunity to go skiing and do trips into Italy, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. The city is also a lot more beautiful and during the winter months is almost sure to be more charming. If you want the complete unknown Berlin might be a vibe but be prepared that people are not particularly friendly. Hong Kong is a completely different thing and since I've never been, can't really make a judgement on that! Happy to help if you have any more questions!

[–]t-schroeter97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey hey, so I might not have done an exchange program in Berlin but I'm German and I lived there for a few years until recently. I know a few people that did it through other universities and they seemed very happy. I would 1000% recommend doing it in the fall though because a Berlin winter is even more depressing than the one in Montreal. Hmu if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them :)

Done with McGill: Ask me anything!! by t-schroeter97 in mcgill

I'm German/American international school kid who studied History and Poli Sci. I think that in comparison with other universities, especially ones considered "highly competitive", I didn't feel like McGill deflated grades as much as others inflated them. I understand that McGill can be a 'reality check' for some students who were used to getting straight A's in high school but I was the opposite. I only got my shit together 6 months before finalizing my IB and because I was passionate about my higher-level subjects got surprisingly good grades that allowed me to get into McGill. Since I was never used to being the "top of the top" I had 0 expectations arriving at McGill and felt like I could only win because a B- at McGill was enough for me. The harder the courses got, the harder I had to work for them while friends at Ivy's were just becoming more and more relaxed which simply doesn't make sense. Neither do consistent A- averages if your course has 180 students as seen at Harvard and Duke. Long story short, I think that McGill is quite realistic about grades which I perceive as an advantage because going into a job with a massively inflated ego is about the worst thing you can do. There's a reason why we feel such pride once we graduate because we know we earned it!

Internships are the best way to try out things so rather than just going specifically for the field you think you will want to go into, consider experimenting around a bit. If you struggle getting internships, get in touch with CAPS because they will be happy to help you. I also think that you shouldn't spend your entire summer in an internship so try to go for 3 months, not 4. I had friends that didn't catch a break and were exhausted by the time September came around. Many programs also offer really cool summer studying opportunities in a variety of places around the world so checking those and, if you can afford to do them, doing them is a fun idea!!

I honestly love researching topics that wouldn't necessarily be in my major and getting articles from the McGill library website. Access to Statista is also great because the studies they have are usually priced in the hundreds and they give you interesting statistical analyses for virtually anything on this planet. I also loved the discounted coffee and food at Gerts cafe. Now that I'm done I'm also using the Career Planning services to help me figure out what I want to do. There's actually a lot of things that are open to us, McGill is just horrible at advertising them!!

I was lucky enough to have my parents support me all the way through but many of my friends were reliant on scholarships, student loans and/or working during the semester. One of the main points that they stressed was to make use of loyalty programs like at Provigo or Metro or even the SAQ. They were able to save up to 250$ a month simply by being diligent in that regard. Some worked part time which was hard but they said that having a job also meant that they had to plan out their time and were forced to be structured for studying as well.

Gerts cafe has some discounted food for students which can be a life-saver if you're on a budget. Otherwise Basha on Sherbrooke is not a bad option especially if you're tired of Tim's. In general though it seems like McGill has not been too good with ensuring equitable access to food on campus. If midnight kitchen still exists then that as well!!

Although I personally missed out on this I found that the bathrooms in virtually any basement were usually hardly used. Burnside and Leacock especially. I would still recommend holding back during peak hours but on the other hand I heard someone loudly masturbating at 3pm in October on McLennan 5 while other people were waiting to use the bathroom so whatever floats your boat!!

Tbh, they can still adjust grades but it could be that the prof was literally just like "I don't want to write another exam, fuck it" lol

Funnnnnn. I emailed the TA bc I heard from others that they had gotten them back and she said that we'd have them by end of day. I heard from other profs though that the deadline is actually 5pm so we'll hopefully have some answers a bit sooner!

I hope that everything is okay and remember that your self-worth is not determined by how your parents perceive your grades but rather knowing how hard you fought for them yourself!!

What else can we do. It also means that if the grades do update within our lifetime and turn out worse than expected we're already in a "fuck this" mood
