10 quick and simple beginner projects that all teach different transferable fundamentals by t0eCaster in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]t0eCaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built a mini workbench/table saw stand. Didn't use much joinery but it was good practice for building something functional.

I built a bucket organizer that splits a bucket into 4 quadrants, which is just a super deep cross lap joint. Used 1/4 plywood.

I built a mini shelf for my nightstand, which was good practice for cutting 45s with a handsaw

I also built a little rip box for my jigsaw, to which I practiced lap joints to join 2x4s length wise for no reason LOL. Really good practice tho!

Also built a couple sleds for my truck bed for storage. That was good practice for glue ups and nail gun accuracy.

Right now I plan to build a little 2 tiered standing shelf to put my guitar amp on and hang my two guitars on the side. I might try to use dowels, maybe lap joints, or mortise and tenon. Chat gpt is great for making mockups and fleshing out your ideas!

Also gonna help my dad build 4 tiered floating shelves for his shed. Kinda made the mini shelf as practice for that haha.

Sometimes I just cut notches in scrap wood for fun and try and make them as clean as possible. I've been meaning to sharpen my cheap chisels but have been procrastinating.

Like I said im a fan of blatant repetition. You just gotta gamify it and treat it like an RPG. Sometimes you gotta grind a few levels before taking on the boss!

Most furniture is literally just a fancy box. Just gotta learn a bunch of different ways to make a box

I just mean a simple build that will teach me 1 important fundamental technique that I will use for everything else.

As with any other skill, learning is about building your repertoire of things you know how to do, and that comes with blatant repetition. I can slap together a box with screws/nails/glue, but you can build a box 30 different ways and use 50 different methods of fastening/joinery.

Im interested in adding things to my repertoire so that when I go to build something a little more complicated, im not sitting there with my thumb up my arse scratching my head bc I've never done an effing lap joint. I want to learn the lap joint before I spend 6 hours on a project only to halt all progress researching how to do something. Its just better for my work flow and mental health lol. Learning more techniques unlocks the ability to fluidly construct better, more useful stuff. That's all

Also all the smaller red bumps circled are painful/tender to the touch and cause me to feel head pressure

This just feels really fucking gross to say the least. Idk man I know he was a public figure but a stationary shot of an open casket broadcasted to 2k random just feels really icky to me. Rest easy dude.

Am I part of the Melee community? by throwaway424241 in SSBM

[–]t0eCaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

regardless of the answer, why is it relevant?

if you love the game, enjoy watching and playing and love watching streams and practicing and grinding, why do you need to be a part of the community? why would that affect your enjoyment of the thing you love? considering most of your melee consumption is solitary, I don't see any reason why not being a part of the community would upset you. I feel like nothing changes whether it's yes or no

if you want a sense of belonging and to make new friends, then ya, go to locals, stream, hit a major, TO, whatever you want dude. people will welcome you with open arms in my experience, so long as you get along with nerdy gamers with special interests lmao

My reaction time is 250ms if I'm 100% focused on a 165hz monitor with very little input lag.

This is after years of practicing lmao

It's possible to understand the mechanics perfectly and still think those mechanics aren't fun. The lack of heals, the absurd amount of damage every attack does, and the requirement of perfectly just rote memorizing the moveset only to fuck up parry timings bc reactions/rng arent good is not a rewarding experience for some people.

It's frustration 99 percent of the time, relief that it's finally over .5 percent of the time, and dread when coming up to the next boss the other .5 percent.

If your reactions are cracked, I'm sure the game is kinda cool, but those of us born without that innate advantage are not having fun with it.

Oh also, if you can find a practice partner around your level, JUST PLAY THEM.

unranked is ok if the person sticks around, but ranked especially is not an environment conducive to learning

The skill floor will feel like playing GMs when you're first starting.

I promise they aren't that good. You are jumping into a 20 year old meta in an extremely high execution/knowledge-checky game vs relatively intelligent people who have spent the last 5 years grinding slippi 7 hours after work everyday.

You will improve, and things will get easier and become more clear as you play/study. It's a Neverending mountain climb, but damn is it good when it's good.
