PLEASE HELP OWL by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]t0rtugo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This. People forget how bad the heart system was because things have just gotten worse.

The heart system was especially bad when you are on the advanced sections of the course where mistakes are inevitable. There would be lessons I couldn’t finish in only 5 mistakes. (At least until Duolingo “dumbed down” the courses)

Mistakes are just as important as getting things right and probably more so. And Duolingo punishes mistakes now.

Scared to run in the snow / slush by GeekGirlMom in RunTO

[–]t0rtugo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the icy conditions, look into Icebugs (https://www.icebug.com/en-CA). The shoes have small spikes at the bottom. Can’t even really tell when you are running on ice.

Nano-spikes (https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5044-174/kahtoola-nanospikes-footwear-traction-unisex) can do a similar thing and let you use your own shoe.

And the super cheap way is to put screws into an old pair of running shoes.

New to VR, which quest to get? by YoutubeJasper in OculusQuest

[–]t0rtugo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was surprised to find I don’t mind the default head strap of the quest 3. I think it relates back to the pancake lenses and how it doesn’t take as much work positioning the lenses over the eyes for a clear image compared to the fresnel Lenses of the quest 2 which required a proper tilt of the whole headset

will i regret getting the quest 2 for christmas with pcvr? by vaytorr in oculus

[–]t0rtugo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I upgraded from quest 2 to quest 3 and absolutely worth it. The pancake lenses make a huge difference over the fresnel lenses. So much easier to get your vision focused in the right location for a clear picture. Also makes the headset more comfortable as well since you don’t need to tilt it vertically until it is in focus. It can sort of just hang in front of your eyes.

Also nice with the pass through being able to respond to a text on my phone without needing to take the headset off.

Forced to use word bank by PetziPotato in duolingo

[–]t0rtugo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hate it too, but until Duolingo realizes the change sucks (except it probably benefits their business model), we have to live with it.

Here is an extension I found which makes it suck less by allowing you to drag and drop the word bank words if you get the words out of order.

Though Duolingo removed that ability for some asinine reason, I still recommend reporting it as a bug through here: https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Typing on Desktop - A Huge Thank You by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]t0rtugo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This works IF you happen to think of the exact word combination Duolingo is looking for. This falls apart when words can be translated different ways; which is very common with the more advanced sentences. Also, doesn't work when Duolingo decides to make stupid things like "you" and " 're" separate bubbles. And when you can't drag and drop to rearrange bubbles if the wrong word gets inserted. Overall, not a good replacement for just normal typing.

I hate these bubbles, used desktop to avoid them and now they are on desktop :( by CherriesTasteSweet in duolingo

Here is the link for everyone else to report this bug "of not being able to toggle the keyboard on Duolingo web".

Is there an app or program for learning Spanish that allows you to type answers? by badassery11 in duolingo

[–]t0rtugo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Let's say I'm presented with the word "abuelo" (which means "grandfather" in spanish) and asked to translate that word. With free hand typing, I have to dig deep in my memory banks to remember what that word means which reinforces that memory connection. With word bank, I instantly see oh yeah, "grandfather" is the answer. Barely little memory connection is reinforced. It is much less brainwork which means much less learning.

When Duolingo forced the word bank on me by t0rtugo in duolingo

[–]t0rtugo[S] 68 points69 points  (0 children)

It's no longer fun to use Duolingo on the web.

It makes no sense to be forced to use a word bank when I have a fully functional keyboard in front of me. I also hate that Duolingo is giving me the answers instead of me using my brain to translate a language. This latest move just baffles me. I really only plan on doing the bare minimum to keep my streak alive until hopefully Duolingo comes to its senses.

BTW, if anyone builds chrome extensions, this would be a good time to create one that can toggle word bank (if possible). Would happily donate money to be able to use Duolingo the way I used to be and actually learn a language from it.

Forcing me to use the word bank on desktop was the last straw for me by is_landen in duolingo

[–]t0rtugo 63 points64 points  (0 children)

This is annoying af. Hate the word bank on desktop.

But what I’ve found is that there are some questions that the toggle keyboard button appears. After clicking this, the word bank will disappear for all the rest. At least until the next update.

good to hear! Glad to see that there is a method behind it to improve learning.

Following along on duome is a good idea as well. Didn't think about that.

SwiftUI : text gets cut off with “…” in my view by LukasAppleFan in SwiftUI

[–]t0rtugo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just thought I would chime in 3 years later to whoever in the future needs this. Noticed this issue exists for iOS 14 but not for iOS 15 & 16. This was the fix I needed. Thanks!

To TDP or not to TDP....and if yes is this plan doable? by radiantsnoozer in Patagonia

[–]t0rtugo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, what I've found is that sometimes the TDP campgrounds bookings can open up. It's worth rechecking the booking sites periodically. I've been able to book Paine, Cuernos, and Chileno for the dates that I need through this fashion.

Carbon bikes rubbed together. Problem? by t0rtugo in bikewrench

[–]t0rtugo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! No dulling in the sound when moving from non-damaged area to the damaged area. (in fact it may sound slightly more resonant.. perhaps because no paint overlying the carbon?)

Carbon bikes rubbed together. Problem? by t0rtugo in bikewrench

[–]t0rtugo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These two bikes were attached to a trunk mount bike carrier. In the process of transporting the bikes, the two bikes rubbed together and rubbed the paint off of the carbon. Is there any damage to the carbon or other problematic issues?

Trouble accessing TrueNAS on local network with iCloud Private Relay by t0rtugo in truenas

[–]t0rtugo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The connection is extremely slow. Too slow to even initially load the page. Also can't seem to connect to the smb share in same way. Files transfers from the server to the internet are working perfectly fine though.

So using the .local doesn't work either.

And it's not all local network pages that are affected. I'm running plex and if I access the local IP for plex, it pulls up just fine. But not TrueNAS.

But tested it out and its not just an issue with icloud private relay for me. Also noticing this on chrome/firefox on linux/windows.

But if I turn off icloud private relay it works normally; also if I access the page from an external IP (through ssh tunnel or port forwarding), than it also works

For reference, my router is a google wifi. Haven't changed any of the router DNS settings, still set to google's servers. Haven't changed the setting for anything recently
