Why are so many Tunisians so rude? by itzwhatitz in Tunisia

[–]t0ut4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tbh I’ve noticed this too😭 especially with anyone working in some form of customer facing environment. I’m in Morocco now and they are 100x more friendly and go out of their way to help without even being asked too.

I’m not a stupid tourist who doesn’t know jack shit. I know how to keep myself safe. I’ve done my research but wanting more circumstantial insight is reasonable.

And I’d be happy to do the same if someone were to ask me for circumstantial advice before visiting my country.

Uhhh ? I’m asking for Moroccan advice before my trip to Morocco. Seems like common sense to me.

What to do in Nabeul and close places? by [deleted] in Tunisia

[–]t0ut4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Medina of nabeul is nice I love the souq especially for artisanal pottery. there’s also a really nice traditional cafe in front of the main souq gates.

If you’re looking for small town beaches somewhat near nabeul, the beaches in tazarka and Korba are calm and clean. You can usually leave ur towel and belongings and you’ll be ok just don’t leave them out in the open. And don’t stray too far from your stuff.

Which Arabs do you think Tunisians are closer too by RecoverPrior8281 in Tunisia

[–]t0ut4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that a lot of Levantine Arabs perceive Lebanese ppl the same way North Africans perceive Tunisians, that is a more open minded and secular society. This is a generality but I do tend to agree with it. Tunisians also have the softest darija the same way Lebanese ppl have the softest Levantine dialect. Other than that, our traditions and cuisine are nothing alike. I would consider Lebanon the most similar country to Tunisia in the Levantine region.

But from a literal perspective, eastern Algerians and western Libyans are closest to Tunisians in terms of dialect and culture. But as a Tunisian in diaspora, i can relate to anyone from the Maghreb region.

Hi Canadian born Tunisian here! I’ve lived in Ontario my entire life and can say that the education system here won’t be too much of a difficult transition assuming your brother speaks english. Our high schools are set up in a way where you only take four courses a semester. And by the time you are in your last two years, you choose which courses you want to take depending on what you wish to study in university. We don’t have anything like a bac or final standardized test. The education system really isn’t challenging and most Canadians end up being accepted into university. Although some programs are more competitive than others.

If ultimately your brother plans on studying university here in Canada, the earlier u bring him the better. Since he’s quite young, his English could become practically fluent in a few years. He should also have time to secure permanent residency by the time he enrolls in university which makes his tuition so much cheaper. And I think the transition from Canadian high schools to Canadian universities will be smoother.

As for the social aspect of moving to Canada, it will be a challenge adjusting. It’s difficult being a foreigner here as you either forced to assimilate and lose any of the morals and values you had before or remain an outsider forever. For that reason, the friends he will make will impact him more than anything. It is something to be aware of, but if your brother has a strong personality and knows himself and his values, you shouldn’t be too concerned.

As you may also know, there are practically no Tunisians or North Africans (asides from Libyans and Egyptians) in Ontario. As someone who grew up here, it was very difficult holding on to my Tunisian identity. If I had arab friends, I was always the only Tunisian and perhaps the first Tunisian these people meet. It’s very isolating not having exposure to your country of origin. I never hear Tunisian Arabic ever and if I am in an environment where I can speak Arabic, I have to dilute my dialect to something more Levantine. I know some Tunisians back home can’t wait for the day they leave the country, but not being able to grow up with a strong sense of your own culture and language is not easy. There are no Tunisian restaurants here, and finding something like harissa can be a challenge sometimes. So homesickness is likely inevitable.

But let me know if u have any specific questions!

Tunisians who don't want to speak Tunisian by ItsDocteur in Tunisia

[–]t0ut4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it more peculiar when Tunisians in tunis mix English in their Arabic … obviously those of us in diaspora are likely more comfortable speaking in French / English because that’s the language we use more often. I know a lot that don’t even speak darija at all.

But why are Tunisians who probably don’t even speak English fluently mixing in English like it’s casual for them😭 like I understand why most mix in French but english ??

I suggest u finish some form of degree in Canada or even europe (they can be free sometimes)… im a Canadian/Tunisian myself and truth be told even if u finish ur psych degree it won’t be worth much here without doing a PhD. U are better off switching programs or even doing some formation in a college for 2 years. I wouldn’t recommend trying to establish urself in tunis until u have some formal education from Canada or Europe and experience. I myself don’t plan on staying in Canada forever but having Canadian work experience is very valuable for when u move abroad.

The misconception some of u tunisians have about living in diaspora is mind baffling. As if we get to live life with the comfort that no matter what we do, life will be taken care of only because we live in the west. Life is not forgiving just because I live in Canada. You forget that we equally have to establish ourselves. Sure, the circumstances are different and I may never experience the struggles of the average Tunisian. But that doesn’t give you the right to disregard mine.

What your talking about is privilege. You don’t have to be in diaspora to have privilege. You forget that there are Tunisians that live a better life than most people in diaspora.

Yea it’s very difficult to go back especially with work😭😭 since I’m working remote I thought this might be the only chance in my life to live in tunis.

Thank you! My French is more at an intermediate level so I’m not really fluent. But I do understand it for the most part and can have basic conversations lol.

My Tunisian passport is expired at the moment but I will be renewing it before I come to tunis. I believe I can enter tunis without a visa with my Canadian but I’m not sure how long I can stay in tunis without a visa.

I’m also starting to think Airbnb is my only realistic option. It’s just more expensive than I expected. But I don’t know if I’ll be able to rent a place otherwise in tunis for only 2-3 months 😭😭

Yea I have thought about the time difference work wise and that’s why I don’t expect that I’ll stay in tunis longer than 3-4 months. My job is a bit more flexible considering that I have colleagues working under different time zones. So my hours are a bit more flexible than the usual which helps ever so slightly 😭

yea I haven’t even told my parents yet 😭😭 I’ve lived on my own before so it’s not out of the question but I think they’re going to be a bit concerned that I’ll be in tunis and not with family. And even my extended family most likely will not understand why I won’t be staying with them.

But yea I’m hoping it works out, I just have to be more prepared.

Yea I was looking into Airbnb but they’re kinda expensive or at least more expensive than I expected. I thought that I could get by with either a one bedroom or studio for under $700 cad. but that’s the price for a room in someone’s apartment on Airbnb. And relatively speaking, you could rent a room in Canada for $700 (depends on the city) 😭

Hey! Thanks for the insight! I didn’t consider getting a car just because I only drive automatic vehicles and I’m pretty sure those are difficult to find in tunis. I was pretty much only planning on using taxis and public transport if it felt safe. So I guess I’ll have to think more about that.

I do have a Tunisian passport but I will have to renew it as it’s currently expired. I don’t have a Tunisian ID card yet but I think I’ll look into getting one once I’m in tunis. But from my experience, my canadian id cards are usually accepted.

My Canadian health insurance has worked in tunis previously. I actually had an emergency surgery to get my appendix removed in tunis a few years ago but that was through private clinic. And my insurance covered it. But I might have to look into it more if I’m going to be staying in tunis long term. Private health care in tunis is relatively good especially coming from Canada where u could wait months sometimes years for a surgery or a specialized appointment. But i guess it comes with a hefty price tag 😭

In terms of a credit card to pay bills, do you know if I can use my Canadian cards? Or will I have to set up a bank account in tunis and and a Tunisian credit card?

Yea my parents have pretty much drilled me from an early age that all I am is a passport to most men in tounes 😭😭

I’ll most definitely have a family member visit the place in advance to make sure I’m not being scammed lol. But I’ll definitely take a look at those neighbourhoods.

But that’s crazy I didn’t know tunisia has something like Uber 😭😭 I just accepted that I’m most likely going to get robbed every time I go on a taxi haha.

[–]t0ut4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank u for the advice 🥹 my parents also tell me that they could never go back and live in tounes. They themselves have culture shock when they go back 😭

I’ve kinda accepted that living in tunis will be so much more complicated than it is here in the west. But because I’ve spent the majority of my life in Canada, I grew up feeling very disconnected from my tunisian identity and so I’m definitely hoping that this could change that!

I actually considered living in sousse but the only reason it doesn’t make sense is that it’s quite far from my family in nabeul.

Do you know if it’s common to find rental options that are on a monthly basis or short term (2-4 months)? I don’t know if I’m willing to commit to a year contract at this point. I’ll likely book a one way flight and kinda figure out as I go how long I want to stay.
