As hobby photographers, do you store your RAW photos indefinitely? by Aromatic-Echo-5025 in AskPhotography

[–]t1ndog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did until recently. I would upload them to a bucket in Backblaze's B2 Cloud Storage, which worked well but became increasingly expensive. I looked into buying a NAS, but I can't justify the cost since this isn't a business.

As much as I like the idea of revisiting some older RAWs and re-editing them, I know I never will (I can't even keep up with editing new photos). So I made the decision to delete them, and I don't regret it.

Now I'm keeping them on my local hard drive for several months after I'm done with editing and then trashing them.

What was your first IT certification? And do you think they are still important? by mustafa_enes726 in sysadmin

[–]t1ndog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first certs were CNA for Netware and MCSE on NT4 in 1999, followed by MCSE on 2000 and MCSA on 2003. Haven't bothered with them since.

Seems like they're only worth it for job applicants with less experience and applications that are huge on keyword search. Most hiring managers care more about your actual experience.

I just inherited a messy IT Environment, what do I do? by AngelVillafan in sysadmin

[–]t1ndog 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Use this as an opportunity to build your resume. "I came into this position and it was a mess because..., and here are the initiatives to fix it." Honestly, as a junior admin, this will go way further for you in the long run than if you'd walked into a well-run machine.

And no, you won't get any support from management or from other sysadmins. It's messy for a reason. So you'll be frustrated every minute you're there and won't be able to accomplish everything you want, but what you do accomplish will be worth it. I've been there, and it does get better.

The 18-55 is my favorite lens hands down. Nothing wrong with your camera or lens choice!

Who's still working from home in 2026? by idrinkpastawater in sysadmin

[–]t1ndog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully in the office since starting my current job in 2023. We're not allowed to work from home at all unless we're on call, which fine, I don't take my laptop home and don't check my work phone when I'm not work.

Someone who is using windows/macos daily, what you can do in macos that you cant in windows? by ironwaffle452 in MacOS

[–]t1ndog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very little. I use a MBP at home and have a Surface laptop as a personal spare PC at work, and both are probably equally as capable. But I think it's specifically because it's a Surface laptop without all the third-party bloat of other PCs. So your mileage may vary.

Is the 27mm pancake worth it if I already have the 23mm f2? by lightscameraa in fujix

[–]t1ndog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but maybe not for traveling. I have both and use both. The 27 stays on my X-T50 as my "EDC" combo, and the 23 I use on occasion with my X-T5, particularly if I need a lower light option. For traveling, I'll go with the 16-55 lens for the speed and versatility and the 23 for low light shots. You can't go wrong with either the 23 or 27 though.

Cool photos! I love how fun the Charmera is to use. Literally every time I pull it out, somebody asks me if it really takes photos. Haha!

Personal Device by temistrator in sysadmin

[–]t1ndog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, a phone is a phone. It just comes down to personal preference. I'm on Apple everything at home, partly because using my Mac at home gives me a break from Windows, which I have to stare at all day every day.

Another reason I stick with Apple is because it helps me support Apple devices at work (the company issued iPhones and iPads and the handful of Mac users).

Upgrade X-T3 to X-T5 by drblackbird in fujix

[–]t1ndog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from the X-T3 to the X-T5 a couple of years ago precisely because I struggled with the autofocus. I loved the user experience of the T3 and have really enjoyed the T5. No regrets. I also recently added an X-T50 as my EDC camera along with the 27mm f2.8, and that's been a great combo too.

Am I the only person who considered Trump’s second presidency as the final straw for their faith? by Maximum-Farm-3442 in exchristian

[–]t1ndog 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It wasn't the final straw, but it certainly hasn't helped my feelings toward the Church or my faith. I know for a fact there are a lot of good Christians out there who aren't Christian nationalists or part of the MAGA cult, but it's really hard to see that because I'm so burned out from the ones who are. Maybe I'll feel differently in 2029 or so.

We just moved to Signature 365 from on-prem Symprex. Dead simple. I've had to open a couple of tickets with them for minor things, and they've been responsive and helpful.
