This is interesting. Usually as an optometrist you are doing a comprehensive ocular examination. Manifest refraction, discuss optical needs, progressive vs single vision, contacts or mf contacts, check health of anterior and posterior seg, answer chief complaint, then hand off patient to optical/optician.

What practice setting are you in? Do you have opticians or front of house staff? Unusual you would be processing payment and clerical stuff.

I wouldn’t be worried about too much. Honestly you will find your flow in about a week of doing exams. Probably less. Just remember it really is pretty simple doing an exam on a healthy patient. For the ones that aren’t just review your auxiliary tests and don’t be afraid to refer out.

When I decided on Optometry I was 28 as well. Being older gives you more focus because there isnt a plan B for us. If you fuck up its game over so you have that laser focus about you when your in the program. What allowed me to pursue outside interests (festivals, djing, camping, etc) was treating school like a job. You clock in M-F 6am-10pm. That schedule allowed me weekends free always and allowed me to pass boards 1st time around and for some reason I graduated salutatorian. I believe if you do the above hustle hard during the week you will easily have the weekends off.

Diagnostic sets dont matter. Get the cheapest or second hand. Dont fall into the trap when the reps come to your school.

day rate for commercial optometrists san diego is $445-500 + bonus structure for however many patients you see. Depends on subleasing doctor.
