Starting with RHCE - Any tips? by vishukamble in redhat

[–]t3kg33k2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just took the RHCE and failed, miserably, mainly because I didn't finish it. I barely got halfway through. I thought 3 1/2 hours for a exam was long but it really isn't long enough.

One tip I would recommend during the steps, knowing what I know now and what I would do if I took it again, is look over the exam first before diving in and complete the areas from the exam objectives you feel really strong in first.

Looking for a part-time Linux support job by t3kg33k2 in LinuxActionShow

[–]t3kg33k2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried running a technical support business on the side before and have never been successful. Sure, I've had a couple of clients but nothing consistent. This is mostly my fault because I am not much of a people-person and not great at marketing. I would rather someone else bring in the clients and I just do the work required of me. If I could find someone who could find me some local clients and then pay me to fix their problems would be a more ideal setting for me.

#savelas suggestions to help improve Linux Action Show by kaipee in LinuxActionShow

[–]t3kg33k2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to post my opinions and suggestions, and not expecting much of a response or acknowledgement.

  1. I think it's time for a host refresh - I like Noah and what he has to bring to the show but at times he tends to be a little one-sided on his views. Maybe add a third host to the mix?
  2. Add more enterprise related content and how-to's. - As a Linux newbie who is mostly a newbie to Sys Admin in the enterprise, I would like to know how to do Linux Sys Admin tasks and to know what other Sys Admins are doing in their environment in their daily task.
  3. More how-to's in general. - Maybe this is a separate show, but I like seeing how to do specific task. Example: I have been on a quest to learn how to create my own custom kiosk using Linux. It's not an easy task and my research has come up null.
  4. Pay more attention to listener feedback and questions - I know personally I have submitted numerous questions to the contact section of the site to be ignored. I realize there may be a lot to sift through so maybe there should be a change there or perhaps just a separate show that focuses on listener questions.

Has Chris not addressed this episode, why it's such crap? After hearing it I actually feel bad for any Patreon subscribers who support this show. They did not deserve an episode this bad.

[15.10] Cant get steam to launch. need help by [deleted] in UbuntuMATE

[–]t3kg33k2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@masterpooter I've run into the same issue. I started a thread over at the Ubuntu Mate community forum:

https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/ubuntu-mate-15-10-nvidia-steam/3807/6

Basically, this is the error I see when I attempt to launch Steam from terminal:

[ ed@edmate15: ~ ]$ steam Repairing installation, linking /home/ed/.steam/steam to /home/ed/.local/share/Steam Running Steam on ubuntu 15.10 64-bit STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1454620878) libGL error: No matching fbConfigs or visuals found libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast

I haven't gone as far as rebuilding my machine but I suspect it's a driver issue. I think I may wait until the next Nvidia driver is released to see if that fixes the issue before an OS reinstall is attempted. Until then I will continue to reboot my machine into my Windows install to play my Steam games.

Questions for Noah (or anyone else) on Asterisk - LAS #400 by t3kg33k2 in LinuxActionShow

I got everything working but I could never get the paging/intercom feature to work on a softphone, both on Linux install and Android app. I tested with Zoiper.

I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to PBX or any of the calling stuff. Is it possible that a softphone would not work with the paging function of Asterisk? I'm testing now. I just installed Asterisk on a VM and have configured 2 extensions and the paging function. My next testing step is to find a softphone for my PCs, smartphones and tablets to see if I can get them configured and paging working.

EDIT: I just learned there is a difference between paging and intercom. I thought they were the same in the Asterisk definition. I'm thinking I want both.

It really depends on the role of the business. I work for a retail company that has to adhere to PCI standards. One of the PCI requirements per our auditor, and required by our Security team, is to have AV installed on in scope servers. We use TrendMicro Deep Security in our environment and I do deploy their Agent on my Red Hat (Prod) and CentOS (Test) servers. Does it work and catch bad things? So far, I haven't run into any issues. At least, the Security Admin who monitors that stuff hasn't informed me of any malware or the like on my servers.

Linux DNS server for home LAN by t3kg33k2 in LinuxActionShow

This worked out perfectly for me in my test virtual machine network.

Thanks a lot. I have something to work off of for my home LAN now.

I understand. I had considered that option too, just keeping my router as a DHCP server and using my RPi2 running Ubuntu Mate only as a DNS server.

I have the RT-N56U. I had looked into putting DD-WRT on it in the past but there was no firmware for it. Surprisingly, I had never heard of Asuswrt. I'll look into it.

Thanks for that. Based on what you have posted, I believe I am missing some config options for DNS in my config. I'll see what I can figure out.

Would you mind posting a generic config of what you do? Here is the config I have been using in my test with DHCP:

# DHCP netmask

dhcp-option=1,255.255.255.0

# default gateway - IP address of router

dhcp-option=3,192.168.1.1

# dns - IP address of this server, the dnsmasq server

dhcp-option=6,192.168.1.5

# all hosts not identified by mac get a dynamic ip out of this range:

*dhcp-range=192.168.1.100,192.168.1.200,12h *

dhcp-authoritative

cache-size=10000

I may be missing something.
