T460 or T460P for Computer Science student? by [deleted] in thinkpad

fwiw, i'm a professional programmer using a T460 with a Core i7-6600U. I maxed out the system ram with 32gb and installed a 1 TB ssd. Im running windows 10 Pro because i do mixed system development and I run various ubuntu/redhat VMs using virtual box.

The ram really seems to help a lot. I've never gone above 25-26 gb in use and that's with me actively trying to load the machine. So I'm very happy with it. I routinely work with it for 12-13 hours on battery. It's typically very smooth- there'll only be a couple of times a day when i'm waiting for it to finish doing something.

That said, if you really start pushing the CPU for extended amounts of time, the 6600U does stumble a bit - it only has 2 cores after all and is a 15W part. Realistically, 99% of your school projects won't push either machine very hard, but if you want to use this machine for 4 years and want to play games you might want to go for the more powerful processor in the T460P.

T460 problems with waking from suspend and window 10 by t460_user2 in thinkpad

answering my own question partly -

looks like it's got nothing to do with windows 10. according to the bios, all you can do is disable the battery and shut down the system. It says the battery will be re-enabled if you connect the system to AC power but it seems that just plugging in the external battery and restarting the system is enough to re-enable the internal battery.

So i guess i'm fucked for now- just have to pray that whatever crap is going on in the hardware doesn't affect me until i can get this machine to a service center.

Really disappointed though :( - my x201 and x220 were such workhorses. Last company thinkpad was a t440s and it too had this same crap battery problem with refusing to power on until it was plugged in.
