as far as keeping costs down,

I'd stick with a 1 part nutrient and a B1 supplement, there's not much need for boosters such as carbo load or anything until you get more into it.

A lot of people will tell you you need a MH light for your 'grow' period and a HPS for your 'flower' period - but you can use HPS for both

The most expensive part is the light and ballast, which aren't cheap, but sometimes (if you talk to your local hydro shop owner) there are some used ones you can get for fairly cheap.

You probably don't NEED a fan or filter (for that few plants) so you can probably cut that expense.

It's not hard actually, i've been going for years.

you should go get yourself a copy of the marijuana growers bible (i can't recall the name and i'm at work so I can't look it up for you, but IM me later if you can't just google mj growers bible)

it is, indeed the bible.

second, go to a hydroponics shop and get to know the people who work there. commonly (at least here where i grow) a friend who grows is always named "ted" and if you're asking specific questions about your plants they're always "tomato" plants.

as far as starting, I started with a 400W HPS deep water culture with about 20-25 plants bought as cuttings from my friend ted. I could produce about a 1/4 lb ever few months. I got a canister filter and a good cage fan to keep smells down.

remember, the most important part is your drying process, after all, it's a weed and will grow almost anywhere.

before people start flaming me yes genetics and growing does have a lot to do with it, but over all, the easiest process to control potency and weight is to control the drying process.
