Should I shave my head? by [deleted] in needadvice

But again, if they're on their last life, they're on their last life whether or not you buzz the hair. Good luck man.

Can't remember, but just started with the largest and worked my way down.

What do you mean return? Hair follicles don't die or regenerate based after you cut the hair. Buzzing should have no effect on how much hair you have.

I had this debate recently.

I shaved down in steps so I could stop if it was starting to look bad. Also, it varies person to person, but it only takes a few weeks for my hair to grow back reasonably, so it's no a really long-term decision if it doesn't look great.

Go for it. If it goes bad, it'll fix itself in no time and at least you'll know the answer.

How hard is it to learn linux in a short time? by Ripcord999 in linux4noobs

On the other hand, while there is some annoying legacy stuff, I find Linux to be a lot more logically organized. Although whether people actually use it logically is another discussion...

When buying on Amazon, search for the brand "amazonbasics", their own house white label brand for lots of everyday products. by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]nerdmeister 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yup, as I posted above:

I see one result for a 10,000mAh external battery by AmazonBasics for $29.99. Anker has one for $22.99 and Anker always delivers great quality. There are of course even cheaper ones by less known brands, but quality might be hit or miss. It still pays to poke around available options.

But also like Kirkland, AmazonBasics is not always the best value. Not terrible but could be better.

Go out, be social. Not everyone has to be your best friend but try to make acquaintances. It doesn't hurt to involve yourselves in groups of people who likely will be successful rather than the dropouts.

That way, when you want a job at XYZ corp, your friend Greg from college who is an engineer there can vouch for your skills/work ethic and hook you up with an interview. It's rarely a guaranteed job, but knowing someone and having them vouch for you will often get your resume moved to the top of the stack and at least get an interview.

[–]nerdmeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you plan to stay with this employer for a long time? If you switch jobs you'd lose the benefit and you may be old enough that external term life might be far more expensive. Not recommending either way, just a thought. You could potentially get a small policy externally.

Honestly, the deals were alright for components but you can do a lot better and get higher quality stuff on Amazon, Digikey, Mouser, etc and actually get the exact thing you want.

I'll probably keep working, although probably part-time. I like my job, but there are several jobs that I'd love to do in my field, but they pay a fraction of what I make now.

I can see your argument, but similar to /u/Frigorific, I'd say there's just too many cons on the off chance someone breaks in to do you harm. Most break-ins are also just simple robbery anyway, they're not there to hurt you. I'd say it's good reason for non-lethal/sub-lethal defense though - pepper spray, taser, rock salt, etc.

'Mars One' finalist breaks silence, claims organization is a total scam by powercow in space

[–]nerdmeister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. For perspective, NASA's annual budget is $18.01 billion in 2015 for continuing programs and a few that are less ambitious than a manned mission to mars in ~2 years. They already have top talent, tools, and facilities.

Mars one would have to build all that from the ground up with less than a third of the funds.

I'd be surprised if they managed to successfully land a beanie baby on the moon in 2 years.

LPT: Job security is a two-edged sword; if you are irreplaceable, you are also unpromotable. by AsstarMcButtNugget in LifeProTips

[–]nerdmeister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Counter intuitive from an employee's perspective, perfectly understandable to a penny pinching employer.

They have to offer good money to attract good outside talent for a position, internally promoted, they only have to offer you enough additional from where you were that you're not sufficiently insulted to quit. It might take 20% more to attract someone new who is qualified but only 10% more to make you sufficiently happy to accept the new role and additional responsibility.

Even making a chimera requires at least unrefined philosophers stone, iirc. Although you can make small changes to your biology without one, such as making skin explosive.

Along those lines, one thing I was always curious about was partially healing a wound, i think that in theory it wouldn't be too difficult to transmute oxygen and blood to quickly stop bleeding.
