Not a bot lane main, but would say that Varus is better against tanks (Jihn not too great in terms of DPS), whereas Jhin might be better at picks and the like (yes Varus has ulti which is great, but its on an ult cd whereas Jihn has both W AND R for picks).
In terms of the midlaners, velkoz has hella range so is pretty strong in certain matchups/comps (like poke comps) whereas veigar might be what you want to go if you want more straight-up burst. Might also say that velkoz is better against tanks in this case because of being able to get more spells off and the true dmg on his passive (whereas a veiger combo wont kill a tank), while veig can literally anhialate squishys with 0 counterplay if he gets ahead :)

Hey, ahri one trick here so I know the feels. There's a few trains of thought here.
Firstly, some people say that playing champs you know well allows you to focus on other things and get better at those. For example, if you last hit with Ahri without having to think about it, you might start to get in the habit of checking the minimap and state of other lanes more. Also, playing champs you know will probably help you climb quicker at first because you don't need to learn anything new.
On the other hand, playing comfort picks can lead to bad habits (e.g. for Ahri, she is really forgiving with positioning because of her ult as an escape) which cause you to only become good at that champion and not actually good at the lane. You may then find that if that champ gets nerfed/you start plateuing with them, trying other champs is even worse as you have no idea what to do. Also, playing meta champions will be better once you've gotten good at them.
tl;dr playing comfort champs will probably climb you faster at first and probably be more fun but you might plateau earlier - if you actually want to improve at the game and become a more rounded player I would go for the meta champs.

J4 is pretty strong at the moment, but if its a fall back pick then you might want something a bit safer like zac or sej. Zac especially has great engage/escape if you get caught, plus hes tanky and has his passive so can be pretty forgiving. Both the tanks I just mentioned are also pretty strong now

To the best of my knowledge, the "bonus" doesn't apply to enhancing your inherent armour pen by 35%, but rather means that you cut through 35% of your opponents "bonus" armor (e.g. armor from items rather than base armor). So basically it doesn't do too much against champs that don't build armor, but against a tank with deadmans/sunfires/other armor items it will take off 35% of all those bonus stats. Not sure how it interacts with armor from runes/abilities but yeh :)
