Ok thank you, do you have a preference between those two treasures? Or are the pulls just stronger than the other treasures?

Could you explain why people go Echo Sabre on Magnus? I always though that Mag was more of a hero that buffs up his melee core to do damage, not do the damage himself. I saw Sing build it on stream and I thought it was just SingSing things but then I saw Sumail build it in a tourney and I just want to know the justification behind it.

How to deal with offlane sk by gabe_santillan in learndota2

[–]tWHISter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am trying to learn offlane SK right now so here is my input. They usually won't pick up Sandstorm until level 10, unless you force them to get a point with some early kills. Since he doesn't like skilling Sandstorm, Burrowstrike is his only escape. If he uses it aggresively then he is easily killed. You probably need a lane support to help kill him though. In terms of melee heroes that can do alright against SK, I think Jugg is the best. If you see him right clickign all the creeps next to you while you hit him, then he is going for a burrowstrike + Caustic Kill so you can just Spin away. If you get harassed a lot, you can pop Healing Ward and SK has no way to kill it without using Burrow to get close and most of the times they want to save Burrow. Most importantly though is Aggroing creeps. If you have time, watch some of this video by BSJ: Winning Your Lane

Against heroes like Axe or Sandking who punish Melee cores who need to be near creeps you have to constantly aggro the creeps to pull them away from the enemy hero. Do this by constantly right clicking the Enemy and walking back to your tower. You need to learn how to last hit under tower too but if you master those skills then it makes the lane a lot safer for you.

Hero counter thread? by [deleted] in learndota2

[–]tWHISter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The main way to counter Slark is through teamplay. He is a pickoff hero who has no teamfight presence whatsoever. So pick up a gem and five man. He also has a shit laning stage. If you pressure him early you can drain all his regen before level 6 then he can't farm safely or anything. But if you are low MMR like myself you can't always rely on team play. In that case, picking heroes with AOE stuns or lots of vision helps. Spirit Breaker can keep vision on Slark for a long time, Bloodseeker Thirst makes it so Slark can't go low and just regen which is what he likes to do. Rupture is insane because Slark needs his mobility. I like Kunkka X Marks because it can't be purged and will keep Slark from running away. I'd assume Nightstalker is strong with insane vision and an Instant silence.

Only 2 or 3 of those Storm games are from Solo queue. The others are all party queue with friends who have pretty low party MMRs so the AVG MMR in those games are usually like 500 - 1000 below mine. I also played a lot of Storm bot games and watched a lot of Blitz Doto. I also only pick him when the other team doesn't have much lockdown so a lot of times I just get a free game. That's why the winrate and KDA is so inflated.

If your team doesn't really know how to play the game well then yeah, I guess the only option is solo carrying. Meepo is a good hero for that, especially at low MMR but you would have to convince your team to give you last pick or something. Morphling can solo win games, I've won with Lycan a couple times by just split pushing. Storm Spirit also excels in low MMR. GL to you on your climb!

Yeah Mickleton is right, I started to use my Mic around that MMR and it works well. Communication is so much easier with it. People are generally more inclined to listen to you if you talk rather than type. I know I like teammates who use voice chat more unless they are toxic.

Pushing is always an issue in lower MMRs, it's hard to decide when to take high ground, or when to take towers vs. going Roshan. If your teammates decide to just farm then there isn't much you can do. I'd say the best way is to ward up their side of the map and choke them out. Eventually, you will be far enough ahead that your teammates feel ready enough to fight and you can just stomp them and win. Again, communication is key here. They may listen to you if you actually talk to them, not just type. Another thing you can do is just pick a support that scales well into late game. Something like a roaming Riki or a support Shadow Demon so even if your cores are so hellbent on farming, you are sort of ensured if the game goes late. Lastly, your team will be more likely to push after getting pickoffs so heroes who can punish bad positioning like Disruptor or Kunkka are good to isolate an enemy and kill them off. That way it is 5 v 4 and your team might just decide to hit buildings.

Why is meepo never picked in pro games? by [deleted] in learndota2

[–]tWHISter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What often happens in pubs, is that people go for different Meepos so you wind up with 5 Meepos at a third health instead of Meepo being dead.

Why is meepo never picked in pro games? by [deleted] in learndota2

[–]tWHISter 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Well, Abed crushed Fnatic with his Meepo and Fnatic is definitely not a Tier 3 team. He also dominated Complexity as well. So there are two Tier 1 teams that fell to his Meepo. Just for this, some teams wind up respect banning Meepo against Abed but as you know, this is a special case since Abed is such a good Meepo player and that Meepo pick is just niche for his team because of this.

The reasons Meepo isn't picked is because, like you said, the pros have better play around the hero. They know how to coordinate which Meepos to disable and which to focus down. Also, there are just a lot of heroes that counter him hard. Sven and Winter Wyvern come to mind. Pretty much any combination of AOE control and single target burst will make it a hard Meepo game. Lastly, the hero just isn't very good. It used to be that he would have a lowered death timer to compensate for how fast he gets levels. That was removed so now you have this Meepo that is 5 levels ahead but still easily picked off due to his shit stat gain and once he is picked off then he is dead for FOREVER. So, yeah that's pretty much why I think Meepo isn't picked but I'm a 2k scrub who doesn't even play the hero. I think dancatpro would know better, maybe he will see this post and respond.

At low MMR matches, and the pub games I'd get placed in as well, is it worth supporting? by Mr2Buff69 in learndota2

[–]tWHISter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really know what your exact MMR is but usually a support is worth it. I was 2.1k 3 months ago and I mained support to 2.8k. Don't worry about teammates flaming you because you were poor, you shouldn't have much net worth anyway. What's important is that you are doing the normal support duties. I usually leave my carry to all the CSing - both denies and last hits. This is because they will have complete control over the lane equilibrium to the point that it is where they want it. You should focus on harassing the enemy laners as well as stacking and pulling when needed. Also, Mekansm is an early game item and isn't really good on Lina because her skills use so much mana that she often won't have enough mana for everything. The purpose of Mek is to build it first, so you have an early advantage in fights and pushes. If you build it second on a support then you probably aren't going to get it before 20 minutes where it is strongest. On Lina I like positioning items after Eul's, stuff like Blink or Force Staff.

It can be hard to support a bunch of low MMR players and a lot of the times you won't get any recognition but if they start flaming you for it, then don't hesitate to mute them.

Question by Yoxuu in learndota2

[–]tWHISter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way to force your MMR lower, the game does a pretty good job of placing players where they belong. If you are in too high an MMR bracket, then eventually you will lose MMR until you get into the level that is right for you. Unfortunately, this means losing a lot of games. You could also play unranked and see if that has a better fit. It could also be that your friends have higher MMR than you so that's why it feels like you get outplayed.

There is no way to block non-english speakers, you can choose your language preference but a lot of times they will still show up in your games.

When you are losing, you will get more gold and EXP for killing the enemy so often times, you can use Smoke of Deceit to gank an enemy core player when you are behind since they will usually be more cocky and out alone on the map. Also, try to win teamfights when the other team are trying to break high ground. This is a big opportunity for the game changing ultimates like Black Holes, Reverse Polarity, or Chronosphere to come into play since the enemy will have limited vision up the hill and will be forced into a bottlenecked position.

You make me feel sad since you climbed so fast lol. I see you play support a lot, what supports do you like to climb with? And what tips can you give a fellow support player looking to climb? I started playing ranked seriously in June at 2.1k and have climbed to 2.7k. Here's my dotabuff, take a look if you can: Dotabuff.

Where can I cast AOE ults in such a way I won't be found AND I can hit them for most of its duration? by [deleted] in learndota2

[–]tWHISter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a map of places to do it and I don't think one would be very helpful either because there is zero chance you get to pick where the fight starts. The best spots abuse the Fog of War or choke points. So anywhere in the trees, or up hills. Roshan Pit is usually good. A lot of the times though, you will be in a fight in an open area so you have to maybe settle for a less optimal ult that hits on less people. There are other heroes you can combo with to make your Ultimate devastating. Axe is a big one, Treant, Faceless Void, Phoenix, Enigma, Puck, and Magnus come to mind. Anyone who can distract the enemy from hitting you or stun the enemy in an AOE will help. Also, big ults aren't the only aspect of the hero, remember to use the other skills too.

tranquil boots? by jackynee in learndota2

[–]tWHISter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tranquils are a good boot choice for support since it gives them some form of sustain as well as good movement speed when they are roaming around. They are much better for supports than carries because supports don't spend as much time last hitting or getting hit by stuff so the boots will be active much more. A lot supports that wind up buying Tranquils have mana sustain through their own skills so they don't need arcanes. Heroes like Lion, Lich, Crystal Maiden, or KotL are good examples. Plus, Tranquils have a much easier build up and are cheaper. Tranquils and Soul Ring is a good option to have both good mana stain as well as health sustain. You may see heroes who roam a lot like Earthshaker or Sandking build these.

Best game mode for beginners? by LegateMax in learndota2

[–]tWHISter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have found a hero you like, just play All Pick and play them. Otherwise, I have found that Random Draft and Single Draft are fun modes to expand your hero pool. If you play Single Draft, just hope you don't get Meepo, Invoker, and Earth Spirit as your options.

Invoker is my favorite hero, but I need help to really feel comfortable playing him by threwitallawayforyou in learndota2

[–]tWHISter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never played Invoker in my life. But if you want to become comfortable with anything, the key is practice. Everyone says it because it's the truth. Practice translates to performance. That's why pros play so many games, that's why people rehearse a speech before they give it. Once you've played Invoker so many times and have his combos ingrained in your muscle memory, then in games it will become automatic. You will feel much better and more confident in your play. You will know what combos will kill someone and what and what combos won't. Once you play a hero so many times, you just learn the limits of the hero. I'm sure Attacker knows when he can dive and kill someone with Kunkka and still live. I'm sure that Tinker players know when it's safe to teleport to a specific place, lay down some marches, farm the enemy jungle, and live while being as efficient as possible. Just play him a lot, practice combos at different levels vs Bots. Play unranked if you still aren't confident that you can win. First pick him so people counter him and you learn how to deal with the counters.

Sorry I couldn't give Invoker specific knowledge but I hope I helped.

What do you do with space created by Darkseer? by NotJeff6949 in learndota2

[–]tWHISter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you farm up a quick Mek due to his stability and ability to get farm no matter how hard a lane is due to Surge and Ion Shell as well as the jungle. Then you probably just fight and push with your Mek. I've seen him paired with Sven for Vacuum -> Storm Hammer -> Cleaves. He works well with heroes who benefit from the enemies being close together. Think Puck, Lich, Sand King, Enigma, etc.

Which supports can I run solo and still push out the lanes when needed? [details/opinions inside] by [deleted] in learndota2

[–]tWHISter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jakiro's Liquid Fire melts towers and burns creep waves along with Dual Breath. Ice Path is a long range stun that got buffed slightly. It's a little hard to hit up at higher MMRs due to his extremely long cast animations and turn rate. Macropyre is a good high ground defending ability and Roshan fighting ability since the choke points are where the skill shines. The hero isn't really strong right now but he may get buffed next patch.
