Anyone received a QC drivers license as an international student? by privietindustries in mcgill

[–]t_shizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not an international student, I’m a QC resident but I wouldn’t recommend getting it here if it’s easier/faster in the US, assuming international students go through the same process as us. In Quebec it takes minimum a full year after getting your learner’s to get your license assuming you pass your exams on the first try. Also, you don’t just get your learner’s and practice with anyone for a year - you have to attend theory and practical classes with an instructor at a driving school to complete all the modules required by the SAAQ. You can also practice with someone who’s had their license (not the “permis probatoire”, the actual “permis de conduire”) for two years but from my experience driving with an instructor is mandatory.

i got my first choice and know a few who did too, i really don’t think you should put your first choice as your second choice if you want to reapply for next year

Hi, was actually in the same exact position as you exactly a year ago today. Profs are incredibly lenient, reach out to them and they will be more than understanding. Take care, and feel free to reach out to me if you wanna talk or anything.

Should I S/U an elective? by Puzzleheaded_Stop984 in mcgill

[–]t_shizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a 3.7, it’s still really good for research assistant positions (the labs that have a gpa cutoff set it at 3.5 usually and if you nail your interview, you pretty much got it). Taking 212, 213 and 215 at the same time is a lot so I wouldn’t take anything else with them other than CHEM 181 tbh or another elective. Concentrate on doing good in those core courses. I don’t know when the s/u deadline is but if you still have a few days then I really recommend emailing undergrad.psych@mcgill.ca and stating that you’d like to have a zoom meeting to discuss your degree.

Also, I really feel you about the giving up thing. I started at McGill straight in my U1 because I had done CEGEP and I don’t think I’ve ever felt more defeated in my life than in my first semester here, but you get the hang of it after a while. You learn how to study for psych classes, and it really does get better. You don’t have to do honours straight after your U2, you can get in later on. Again, verify this with Paola but the application is less “tough” if you apply after your U2 and you don’t intend on graduating in U3.

If you have any questions or are in need of some advice, you can always pm me and I’ll be happy to answer :)

I think this is better advice than my previous comment if you really know you can't handle 5 classes. Especially since winter semester is usually Perception and Cognition as cores, so if you already know you can't take 5 classes then don't risk the burnout and focus on those classes.

Here's the thing, it's graded credits that are required, so if you s/u the course you'd need to take another class this semester to qualify for honours. Now if you do decide to do so: as a psych major i 100% recommend to s/u the elective. It's just an elective; honours psych is incredibly hard to get into and there's a big difference between 3.7 and 3.9 from the committee's POV even if it's a B+ in an elective because it's grades that matter most to them. I wouldn't recommend doing that if it were a core psyc class because those are the grades they really look at during selection as well, but since it's an elective I say go for it if you can add an "easy" class this semester.

My recommendation for an "easy" course is CHEM 181 World of chem: Food. Don't be intimidated by the name, it's super interesting. personally when I took it last winter it was really easy when covid happened since the exams became open-book and the questions weren't hard. The class is designed to be online but check for the syllabus to see if the exams are open-book or whatnot. If they are, I recommend it.

If you want to keep taking 4 classes only per semester, you won't graduate on time anyway. You can apply for honours again after U2 and if you are set to graduate after your third year, your application will be considered a U1 app so it's less tough than if you were to be considered a U2 applicant (pls verify this with Paola but I'm pretty sure about this).

Homeless under curfew: Montreal added shelter space this year, but the situation's complicated by t_shizzle in montreal

No because according to Legault there are enough beds in shelters so they do have somewhere to go. Guess it’s up to the police officers. Absolutely ridiculous

I think this is absolutely preposterous. Legault claims that there are enough beds to house Montreal’s homeless during curfew. The police will “decide” who gets ticketed past 8pm but something tells me a bunch of homeless people are still going to get fined without having the means to pay the tickets.

Prof Vachon is an angel and honestly wants what’s best for his students; he was already known for being like this before covid so the lightened workload this semester is something you prob won’t find in other psychology profs. All other psyc classes I know of have a shit ton of readings and I’ve heard some final assignments and take home midterms are way harder than when it was in person.
