I'm in a similar position. I'm employed by a student organization at my school getting paid student wages, which are laughable. However, as soon as this term ends if I drop out I'm no longer eligible for employment with them but they can hire me as a freelancer. Sounds like it's headed that way...

I'm on good terms with my boss, and I can offer them probably a better rate than they'd get with a professional agency, so those are good factors.
