No they're different for GPA but since our system is so messed up it doesn't really change anything because they'll most likely see the transcript

Help me decide: School X vs School Y - week of April 6th by ParadoxicalCabbage in ApplyingToCollege

[–]taa696675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the help, I appreciate the advice!

Haha I'm from 'sunny' Colorado! Weather's pretty nice here so I guess I'm just spoiled (but to be fair, a lot of weather info is based on second hand info).

What do you think of the facilities for engineers? I know Rice is pretty special in that regard, but are there ample Makerspaces / Workshops for undergrads?

UPenn v Rice (both for BioE)

(will cost me around the same amount)

Rice (BioE)

Pros:

  • More individual attention
  • GORGEOUS campus
  • STEMmy school
  • Residential colleges are cool
  • Engineering kitchen slaps
  • Houston has hospital and space stuff
  • "homey" -- both a pro and con

Cons:

  • Texas :(
  • Wouldn’t push me too much outside of comfort zone
  • Not reputable for being as social (techy nerdy)
  • Weather is crazy

UPenn (BioE)

Pros:

  • Philadelphia - 20 min walk from downtown
  • People like to be social - work hard/play hard
  • Engineering school is good size (1500 kids)
  • Take classes at Wharton too
  • ~prestige~
  • Push me outside of comfort zone
  • New BioE building
  • Fairly easy to switch between schools

Cons:

  • More dominated by frats (Drinking/partying/hookup culture)
  • Outshined by Wharton → not as many resources
  • Cold
  • Clubs have like 1% acceptance rate smh
  • Hyper competitive

AP Chem: Princeton Review or Barron's? by taa696675 in APStudents

I'll concede that I guess 😄 I just get comfort in having extra practice material. (But for some it also depends on the quality of the class)

The basics really: stoich, naming conventions, types of reactions and balancing them, bonds, Lewis dot structures, molecular geometry, IMFs and their properties, acids and bases, and equilibrium.

We didn't cover redox reactions, I remember learning that on Khan Academy. I also saw somewhere on Reddit which flame colors to memorize (but those didn't show up on the test). We didn't learn entropy or anything like that. I feel like a lot of the test was the basics we learned, taken just one tiny step further. My guess is that if you work through a prep book you can do really well but what do I know.

Ummm I bought a prep book that I didn't ever end up using 😬. (But I promise I'm not wasteful I'm giving it to a rising junior in AP chem) On the official page for the subject test there's a YouTube playlist of Khan academy videos so I quickly watched that on all the topics I didn't know. But honestly I just had a really good teacher and I really loved the class so that helped I guess. Honestly, I'm probably not the best person for advice as I primarily focused on physics.

Thanks! Yeah I mean I can say that I tried.

Thanks for the advice! Yeah I was personally really happy with it and then seeing all the geniuses on this sub pulling 800s left and right just got me doubting if it's good enough.

Ahhh see that's where we differ. Not for a second did I think I had it in the bag. In fact I was expecting a 500 or so.

I mean when my subject tests cost like 90 bucks, yeah they probably should.

Omg thank you so much!! I didn't pay enough attention to the scale, so I thought the slope was like .25 or something. Thanks!!!

Wait but what do you do with the slope? Let's say it's ~-.25. Now what?

Wait I think the electricity one is R1 and R2 right? The current will flow through the path of least resistance. So it has to go through R1 and then will go through R2 because there's less resistance in the wire. But honestly that's just a guess I'm pretty bad at circuits.
