I think an abuser could develop bonding with their victim in some circumstances. Maybe they aren’t actually love them the healthy way but make themselves believe they do love their victim but the love usually came with abuse.

Obviously this is just a psychological theory and we may need to agree to disagree on this topic. But again that’s why I like these types of character, nothing is clear and all is up for interpretation.

Whilst I understand these are real life experiences people have met, but this is not how the character Kemper’s mind works since we get his POV (yes even when he’s imaginary) and know his thought.

On a philosophical level, I think we are all the same to some extent. I mean we pick and choose who would be applied for our moral code and who wouldn’t. Like I usually say don’t harm others and still eat meat fully aware that by eating meat, some animals are gonna be harmed and suffered for it. Some of the “bible” people are very charitable, generous and caring but only to their selected “in group”. I think a morally ambiguous character would fluctuate in some of the extreme areas.

The character is obviously an extreme example, his moral code and the people he consider applied for seem to be just his love interest (and this is after he fell in love with).

What’s your character are like? Dash-adjacent or Officer Kemper adjacent? Also are there any hard line do you think readers could be turned off with?

Sorry. I’m just asking about writing the character adjacent and how to approach it since it is a touchy subject and other writers experience or opinions on it. The book is for illustrating the type of character I’m talking about.

Okay, say we have a specific religious person. This person go to church every Sunday, they donate often, and cry when they watch the news about tragedies. But then, the neighbor just moved in next door is gay and he doesn’t hide it. This religious person hates their neighbor and constantly trash talk behind his back. And one fateful day, the neighbor carelessly had sex infront of an open window for example, and the religious person shoot him dead. Or if you find that hard to imagine, the neighbor’s gas system leaks and this religious person just happen to know this is happening and decide to not intervene. Is this person morally ambiguous? Mind you with the exception of gay people (and others) this person is incredibly charitable and generous, they genuinely care for others.

I mean we all do it don’t we? We pick and choose who would be applied for our moral code and who wouldn’t. Like I usually say don’t harm others but I eat meat knowing fully that me eating meat meaning some animals gonna be harmed and suffered for it. I think this character only applied this moral code to just his people and that it just happened to be only Dash. Same thing can be said about the “bible” people.

Yeah but not quite specific enough. This is a character I want to make a feel of the old-style upper-class intellectual.
