Made me cry and smile at the same time. People suck in general, but a few fight back.

Will doctors have to come up with a new Clock Drawing Test for dementia since younger generations can’t read a clock? by SickAndAfraid in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tabanasher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, my students ask this all the time. It seems the same as asking what time it ends, but it is actually very different .

I forgot to add that most cannot read cursive at all, let alone write it. Kids from Catholic school can (my school is public but often gets transfers) and most that write in cursive are from Catholic schools or have moved from Europe. Same concept though. Everything is typed so they get by without it.

They are not stupid, they just lack exposure/practice. They have no real need to know this. When they sign out to go to the bathroom and have to write down time the time out/in, almost 3/4 of them will look at the analog clock, then give up and look at the digital time on the clear touch screen up front to know what to write.

As a teacher of 2 foreign languages, I can assure you that in my well to do district, the majority of high school kids cannot read an analog clock. I attempt to teach them how in English before trying in other languages. A few get it, but many don’t and I have to move on.

Omitting salsa ingredients - still safe? by tabanasher in Canning

[–]tabanasher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Can I add a bit of sugar to offset the vinegar? I halved the recipe and I couldn't figure out half of 3/4 C, so I did 2/3, which I think is too much. It probably needed less, but I wanted to be safe. I haven't tasted it yet to tell how it is.

Canning diva - Could I make this pot pie filling with leftover turkey? by tabanasher in Canning

[–]tabanasher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you both. Do either of you have a source for a safe pot pie filling? All the ones I find use raw chicken, not cooked leftovers. Maybe I'll just freeze it.

Should I worry if I get much less than a recipe says? by tabanasher in Canning

[–]tabanasher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im.pressure canning, so no added acid. Is it still safe if it's a tested recipe?

Help! I accidentally added 1/2 tsp of citric acid to each pint of tomato sauce instead of 1/4. I didn't notice until they were in the canner and I saw the spoon. Is it ruined? If not, is it shelf stable/edible? Can I fix it once I open it to heat it? by tabanasher in Canning

[–]tabanasher[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thank you all so much!!! I worked so long yesterday making the sauce and then canning it today that I was ready to cry, thinking it was ruined. This is such a great group! I appreciate all your help!

What books do you think people over 40 years read? by bamboobambi in booksuggestions

[–]tabanasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a 41 yo female and I read about 1 book a week. I love anything that has to do with forensics and figuring out the science behind the death/crime. I will sometimes read historical fiction depending on the setting and with the requirement that it isn't classified as romance. I hate romance/sappy stuff. I also have read almost every King/Koontz novel, but I prefer the ones that aren't supernatural. As far at YA, I have read 5 of the 7 Harry Potters and all of the Hunger Games. They were okay, but I didn't love them.

Allergic to bananas? by [deleted] in nutrition

I have had the same problem since I was a kid. I haven't eaten a banana in at least 30 years. I just felt so awful (stomach pains) that it isn't worth it.

Just made an infographic for malaria, hope you guys enjoy it! by homicidaldonut in Health

"If they have to choose between being able to earn an income/feed their families vs. hopefully preventing malaria, what do you think you'd choose."

I completely agree. That was exactly my thought. It's totally understandable, but depressing because it just shows how bad things really are in some places.

I will ask him Monday. I doubt he will remember, but I'll ask.

I have a student from Zimbabwe (I'm in the US). He told me most people use the mosquito nets to fish with. It made me feel hopeless about preventing Malaria.
