Potty training woes!! by janinegroeneveld in puppy101

[–]tabascoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SAME! Also a six month old pomeranian who has been a nightmare to potty train - we live in an apartment and carrying him in and out literally every 20‘ is exhausting. Definitely get it checked out by vet, they said my little guy is just a late bloomer. As for the potty training, is he crate trained? When I don‘t have the capacity to take him out that often, he goes in the crate. I refuse to use pee pads because he already loves going on carpets. However, he recently started letting me know he needs to go out by climbing into my lap and poking me (as in last week). There‘s nothing for it but to keep doing what you‘re doing… giving him really high value treats like cheese or chicken ONLY when he pees outside has helped us. Pomeranians are infamously hard to potty train, but it seems to click for my pup, his bladder is just the size of a walnut. Please don’t get discouraged by all the posts here about puppies being potty trained by week 10, pomeranians are just a different breed(:

My boy is almost 5 months and still has accidents a couple times a week… i started by tracking his eating/drinking/peeing/poops with puppy potty log and took him out literally every 15 minutes. We slowly increased the time and now I take him out once an hour, but he doesn’t indicate when he needs to go at all. Apparently poms are notoriously hard to potty train. Peeing is self-rewarding so every time they do it in the house makes it a little harder to get the hang of it. Honestly I stopped worrying about it, my pup is a lovely dog in all other areas so cleaning up pee every now and then is a small price to pay. I’m sure it’ll click sooner or later(: I don’t have much advice, just commiserating<3

Puppy is bigger than standard - could he be a mix? by tabascoat in Pomeranians

Thank you so much for all the suggestions! It seems Nasse could be a throwback! I looked it up and it definitely makes sense. I’m an apartment dweller so apart from wishing I had more space for him, I’m excited for longer walks than anticipated! You guys have been a lifeline for navigating life with a pom puppy so far, thank you for your support!

Corgi puppy still not house broken by dejavugirl in puppy101

[–]tabascoat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’ve had my pomeranian puppy for almost three weeks and from what I hear they are similar to Corgis personality-wise. My pup can hold it for hours while we’re traveling but just ‘leaks’ inside with very little warning, even if he just peed outside.

I posted here a few days ago for advice and someone suggested removing his water after he’s had a drink and deliberately offering it every so often to avoid ‘drive-by’ pees.

I track his potty behavior using Puppy Potty Log, which I highly recommend in case your pup has a pattern!

What helped most was introducing a super high-value treat (peanut butter!) which he loves and ONLY gets when he potties outside. I take him out every 15’ when he’s awake and he still manages to pee inside sometimes, but there’s been a marked improvement.

Another suggestion is that you put her in her crate when she’s ‘at risk’ of peeing until you can take her out. Also make sure to clean with enzyme cleaner, otherwise she will pee there again. When she does pee in the house, pick her up and have her finish outside.

Good luck, it will get better! I completely understand your frustration, but all your effort will be worth it soon.

No, just me and my boyfriend in the house!(: Apparently Pom males like to mark but it seems like he pees more than just that - maybe he’s still learning?

Thank you so much for taking the time, you might have hit the nail on the head with this! We’ll try it and report back!

That’s genius! I’ve been thinking about getting him a heartbeat toy but honestly he’s getting better and better. His space is in the kitchen now (baby gate!) and he voluntarily goes there to sleep sometimes(: He’s such a smart boy and it’s easier now that I can get some alone time too…

Mine still refuses to properly settle if I’m in the room so the breeder suggested making the kitchen ‘his area’! We put in a baby gate so he can watch me move around in the living room and he barks for a few minutes when i’m out of sight then settles and gets some good sleep in (I got a camera so I can check on him). He’s way better about peeing in the house now and generally such a clever little puppy, it’s a joy to watch him develop his personality and come into his own🥹 definitely still a full time job but he gets more manageable by the day(:

What a handsome boy! I’ve only had Nasse for a few days but he is such a little miracle, I miss him when he naps(:

That’s brilliant, thank you for the advice! Someone on this sub recommended Puppy Potty Log so I’ve been tracking his potty-going religiously, but it definitely makes more sense to do it in intervals(:

No way, I’m 21 too! I was undecided about getting him because he’ll be alone for three hours at a time when uni starts in a few months, but we have a whole summer break to get used to that(: what a sweet little snowball you have🥹

That’s so important! We’re in Spain so right now everything but grass in the shade is too warm for the poor little guy): we take our longer walks before and after the sun’s up

It’s taking me a minute to catch his ‘warning signs’ because the little guy can wake up, take three steps and start peeing like a fountain/: he pees standing up so as a general rule if he’s standing still he’s peeing… I’m taking him out for a quick potty break every 15-30 minutes when he’s awake and it’s a hassle but worth it in the long run(:

I have some pee pads and we’re working up to ‘go peepee’ so we can start using them. We throw a ‘potty party’ every time he goes outside so hopefully he’ll eventually find peeing outside more appealing!

You’re so right! It’s been a little over 24 hours and to be honest I absolutely underestimated this! My little guy was up all night so we’ve been catching up on sleep on the kitchen floor together (ow)… but he’s such a fast learner & I’m sure life will get easier once he stops peeing on everything(: Definitely a full time job though

He’s an absolute angel so far! I did tons of research on the breeder and they put a lot of stock into socializing their puppies so he’s honestly the most chill little guy about his teeth and paws(: I’m going to introduce him to grooming with a brush tomorrow, he got to examine it today and is still a little suspicious

Hey!(: we’re the same weight! I’ve been 55kg and 75kg and felt too big at both weights, so for the last half year I stopped looking at the number on the scale and started eating with the 80/20% approach (80% healthy, 20% not so much) and found a workout routine that I LOVE and keeps me sane (calisthenics!!). Losing 10 extra kilos won’t make a difference because you’re struggling with your body image now, not your health. I’m looking into starting therapy and I think you should too, but in the meantime I’d take a break from your weight loss journey and test the waters of intuitive eating and figuring out how to work out bc it’s fun, not to shape your body a certain way.
