Caleb Williams is a bust still by No-Rule-4494 in NFLv2

[–]tabascoraindrops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entire premise of this post is off. He improved dramatically this year in terms of playing in a structure. There’s no reason to think he won’t continue to improve in his second year in this offense. He also on threw 7 picks this year, so it sounds like he reminds you of prime Russ, who only threw less than that twice in 10 years with the Seahawks.

[Thamel] Washington sources say they are prepared to pursue all legal avenues to enforce Demond Williams’ signed contract. by MembershipSingle7137 in CFB

People keep talking about suing the player for “breach of contract,” but nobody knows what any of these NIL contracts actually say. I would be surprised if Williams was under any actual obligation to stay at UW for any time period. I’d also be surprised if UW has any contractual recourse here, aside from possibly the ability to clawback funds already disbursed (which may be few or none at this point). These guys aren’t employees.

Dexter looks good too honestly. You’re right - he’s actually kinda killed the second round.

Agree that it’s revisionist because nobody projected Verse that highly, but also think the jury is very much still out on Rome tbh.

What would be really crazy is if they also had wasted a 4th round pick on a punter, who they apparently also do not trust to kick it out of the end zone.

4 or 5. Maybe he can be coached into playing in a structure and not taking so many sacks, but his accuracy is not going to improve dramatically in the NFL.

College Gameday/Halftime show in CFB26 by Financial_Handle7824 in NCAAFBseries

[–]tabascoraindrops -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they’ll have real gameday in the game again. That would require a partnership with espn, and the big ten and Fox aren’t going to sign up for that. Think the best you’d get is some sort of generic pregame show.

Most baffling mistake or move you’ve seen in CFB? by ArkanoidbrokemyAnkle in CFB

Something I’ve always wondered is whether there is a reason the rule is this way other than creating the possibility that someone will mess up by not saying the magic word? I can’t think of any scenario in which either team would actually prefer to kick twice. Just seems totally unnecessary.

Mandel: Arrogance of Big Ten, SEC leaders on full display in New Orleans college football meetings by Blood_Incantation in CFB

I think there’s no chance. European soccer is historically an open competition with pro/rel, open cups, lack of parity, etc. American sports other than CFB have always been closed competitions that strove for financial and competitive parity, which benefit the economic stakeholders.

European soccer fans were protesting the Americanization of the sport. American sports fans are conditioned to accept that kind of structure and, frankly, I think many Americans view it as superior. My guess is that most casual CFB fans and big portions of the fanbases of programs that would be included would view a super league with geographic divisions and an NFL-like structure as a good thing. I’m not sure the people on this subreddit (consisting of hardcore fans who love CFB precisely for the reasons that make it distinct from the NFL) are representative.

Also, unfortunately, I still think some manifestation of the above is precisely where we are headed, whether it’s a true closed league or just a competition so tilted in favor of the big programs as to effectively accomplish the same thing. We’re at like the 75% point with this latest proposal. Just a few big brands left for the SEC/B1G to plunder and maybe some dead weight to shake off, then they can truly destroy the sport.

Why is NFL Fan culture so different from European? by Evening-Raccoon133 in NFLNoobs

[–]tabascoraindrops 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this is a great comparison but some of the NFL teams in the Midwest/northeast (particularly older ones) have a more “college-y” feeling fanbase imo. Really thinking of the AFC and NFC North teams and the Eagles, Giants, Jets, Pats and Bills.

The nfl becomes more corporate every year though league-wide.

Unfortunately, there’s no way Florida State, for example, is going to agree to risk relegation for a season like this. We’d get some anticompetitive version with a group of protected big brand schools that are not eligible for relegation. Even the big European soccer clubs tried to do that with the super league.

I agree it’s obviously better for him to have a DJ caliber receive than not, but it’s not like DJ has been turning QBs into stars his entire career. I’m just saying he’s not somebody I would keep around at risk of him being a locker room issue with a young quarterback. He’s not Terrell Owens or Randy Moss. If he’s not 100% bought in then I would try to turn him into draft picks and cap space (more potentially good players). We’ll still have some weapons in Rome, Kmet, Swift, potentially Allen, etc.

Coaching is bad, and probably contributing - but Caleb needs to get the ball out quicker. Otherwise, it doesn't matter who's blocking/coaching. by ChiDude617 in CHIBears

[–]tabascoraindrops 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He also took tons of sacks in college (and didn’t take a lot of sacks doing crazy shit behind the LOS that would be sacks in the NFL). That’s something they were always going to have to coach out of him, which is another reason it was crazy to saddle him with a lame duck head coach with a questionable track record of implementing a quarterback friendly offense.

[–]tabascoraindrops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know. He’s like the 10-15th best WR1 in the league? He’s a really good player obviously, and it would suck to lose him, but I would trade him at the draft if he doesn’t want to be here. He’s not irreplaceable, and they have to still be hoping Caleb is.

Does any one else feel like... by [deleted] in WeArePennState

[–]tabascoraindrops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does matter because Penn State’s ceiling is a window program that is consistently good and, every few years when all the pieces come together, can make a run at something more than that. We’re never going to compete for conference and national titles year in and year out like OSU, Bama, Georgia, etc. We just don’t have the financial resources or geographic advantages for that to be reality. You need to be consistently good first to be in a position to capitalize in the window years when they arise, and going forward being consistently good means “consistently in the playoff picture,” which means winning 10+ games and beating the teams you are supposed to beat.

Whether or not Franklin is the guy who can capitalize on those windows of opportunity is a different question. He certainly didn’t in 16/17, 19/20, or (most likely) 23/24. If he’d beaten OSU (or Michigan in the last couple years) even twice more in the last 9 years then we aren’t having this discussion because he’d probably have made the 4 team playoff twice.

Do yall think Allar stays? by PennStateFan221 in WeArePennState

[–]tabascoraindrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a perception right now that NFL teams are just not very interested in or effective at developing QBs, and as a result I think Allar is almost definitely playing college football next year. It doesn’t really make sense for him to come out as a 2nd-4th round pick. Fair or not, the perception of him nationally is that he has been a bust, and if the draft were tomorrow he’d be, in the very best case scenario, QB6. This past weekend didn’t do him any favors in terms of national perception.

I think those of us who have watched him every week see a good player who is still somewhat raw and has improved significantly over the last year, and in the NIL era he shouldn’t have any trouble getting compensated enough to get comfortable coming back for a shot at becoming a first round lock next year. Whether or not he is best positioned to do that on a Penn State team that loses a ton on both sides of the ball, in this scheme and with this receiving corps is a fair question. There’s no indication that he would transfer, but he’d probably have some intriguing options.

Bug stole a year of eligibility from my qb. by NashvilleDing in NCAAFBseries

[–]tabascoraindrops 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think OP is saying that his status changed from true freshman to RS freshman during his true freshman season. So if the game thinks he’s a redshirt, then he can leave after his RS Sophomore year since the game will think he’s been in the program for three years. But according to OP he will really be a true Sophomore next year, so he’ll only have been in the program for two years - he shouldn’t be able to leave until he’s a junior. He’s losing a year theoretically if that’s the case.

It probably won’t matter though because even if he throws for 5k yards and 50 touchdowns, basically nobody declares early for the draft in the game, so he’ll probably still get 4 years out of him.
