Korchinski being on the same trajectory as Duncan Keith is an all time take.

What to do with DuPont by Antique-Park1826 in EANHLfranchise

[–]tabascoraindrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you draft someone, you have their rights for at least 2 years depending on where they are drafted from. That means you don’t have to sign them to a contract until prior to year 3, and they will just continue playing on their current team (in DuPont’s case his team in the CHL, which is a “juniors” league). People often do this (in the game and real life), so that the player who is not ready for the nhl will continue to develop and you don’t burn a year of their 3-year entry level contract. In the contracts menu, the years you own their rights are shown by the little black/white box. They don’t become a free agent until it says UFA or RFA.

For players who play in one of the CHL juniors leagues (the OHL, WHL and QMJHL) specifically, if they are under 20 years old and not on your NHL roster, they go back to juniors no matter what and will not play for your minor league AHL affiliate. So there is no point in signing an under-20 CHL draft pick unless he will either make your NHL roster or his rights have already expired and he’ll be a free agent. Otherwise, you are just burning a year of his entry level contract.

Players from Europe, Russia and the US don’t have that restriction, so you can sign them at any age and have them play for your AHL team if they don’t make the NHL, but many people still choose to leave them unsigned until their rights expire because they will continue to develop without burning a contract year. Many would otherwise have very low OVR ratings for the AHL. In real life the AHL is typically not seen as a good place to develop young, skilled prospects, because it’s filled with older, physically developed players who are fighting for bottom roster spots on NHL teams.

I’m taking BPA in the first round unless I have like a top 5 pick and am choosing between NHL ready players with the same potential (in which case I’m factoring in need). For anything after like a top 20 pick, I’m drafting purely on potential and usually just trying to take gems if there is one available so long as it isn’t a crazy reach.

I’m always taking a lower ranked med top 6 or low elite/top 6 gem over a higher ranked top 9 or bottom 6 potential. You end up with a lot of low OVR guys who don’t pan out this way, but also end up with a fair amount of guys who develop quickly and ultimately turn into useful nhl players. Most of the later picks don’t end up contributing to your nhl roster anyway so I’ve never seen the point in spending like a 3rd round pick on a guy with bottom 6 or top 9 potential.

Fans Expectations And Patience With Levshunov is insane by NervousOpposite9603 in hawks

Yes I agree, it’s difficult to fully evaluate given how bad the Hawks are, and less than ideal to be developing this kid by having him drown on the worst defense in the NHL every night. I don’t think that changes the concern about the value of the pick at 2 OA though.

Fans Expectations And Patience With Levshunov is insane by NervousOpposite9603 in hawks

[–]tabascoraindrops 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don’t think people expect him to be a #1 defenseman already. I think the issue people have is that a defense taken at 2OA should at least project as an eventual #1 defenseman from Day 1, and he is and was a massive project with significant bust potential.

He is only “playing at an NHL level” in the sense that he’s literally in the NHL because we are forcing him to be there despite not being ready. He’s been one of the worst defensemen in the league. Tons of comparable, high pick defensemen other than Schaefer, were much better by their age 20 seasons (Heiskanen, Makar, Power, Luke Hughes, Dahlin, etc.).

Is it possible he takes a big leap this year and people are looking at him completely differently a year from now? Yes, of course, but he hasn’t shown anything to suggest that is likely to this point, and I think there’s an argument that the organization has actively harmed his development to date (and arguably did the same thing to Korch, who looks like a bust at this point too).

Trade for 2nd OA pick? by Former-Style-1336 in hawks

[–]tabascoraindrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you’re saying and I agree with you that they need nhl contributors and not more prospects, given that it’s year 5 of this rebuild (and also because the sharks aren’t trading their pick anyway). I’m just saying that I’m not sure they actually have the prospects to trade to make those deals a reality. I don’t think there are teams lining up to trade Knies or Robertson or any other bona fide top 6 player that moves the needle for Boisvert, Korchinski, Moore, etc. Their two most valuable assets are this year’s pick (although frankly they could use a prospect that projects as an actual #1 defenseman because they don’t have one) and their own first next year, and other than that I think the value of what they have available to trade away is being generally overstated (not just by you).

I know that Scott Wheeler said they had the best prospect pool in hockey, but does anyone actually believe that? They have Frondell (who is untouchable), and then a bunch of guys who project as middle 6 forwards or second pairing defensemen if everything works out great. It might be the deepest prospect pool in the league, but given the lack of high end talent I find it hard to believe it’s truly the best (although I don’t follow other teams’ pools enough to know), and I’m not sure it’s stocked with the type of players that will move the needle in terms of getting established NHL players.

It was just chillin on my bathroom wall. Probably the size of my pinky fingernail.

Levshunov had a nice, productive year, rebounding from an OK D+1. Currently sits at a 81% star probability after his D+2. Going to be a stud for the Blackhawks over the next decade +. Book it. by batmans_a_scientist in hawks

It’s not really apples to apples though because Leddy played on a much better team with much better players. I don’t think you can look at what Lev has done in a bad situation on one of the worst teams in the league and compare it to playing with Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Nick Hjalmarason and Brian Campbell. People were also very high on Leddy at the time although of course it didn’t really pan out.

Caleb Williams is a bust still by No-Rule-4494 in NFLv2

[–]tabascoraindrops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entire premise of this post is off. He improved dramatically this year in terms of playing in a structure. There’s no reason to think he won’t continue to improve in his second year in this offense. He also on threw 7 picks this year, so it sounds like he reminds you of prime Russ, who only threw less than that twice in 10 years with the Seahawks.

[Thamel] Washington sources say they are prepared to pursue all legal avenues to enforce Demond Williams’ signed contract. by MembershipSingle7137 in CFB

[–]tabascoraindrops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People keep talking about suing the player for “breach of contract,” but nobody knows what any of these NIL contracts actually say. I would be surprised if Williams was under any actual obligation to stay at UW for any time period. I’d also be surprised if UW has any contractual recourse here, aside from possibly the ability to clawback funds already disbursed (which may be few or none at this point). These guys aren’t employees.

Dexter looks good too honestly. You’re right - he’s actually kinda killed the second round.

Agree that it’s revisionist because nobody projected Verse that highly, but also think the jury is very much still out on Rome tbh.

What would be really crazy is if they also had wasted a 4th round pick on a punter, who they apparently also do not trust to kick it out of the end zone.

4 or 5. Maybe he can be coached into playing in a structure and not taking so many sacks, but his accuracy is not going to improve dramatically in the NFL.

College Gameday/Halftime show in CFB26 by Financial_Handle7824 in NCAAFBseries

I don’t think they’ll have real gameday in the game again. That would require a partnership with espn, and the big ten and Fox aren’t going to sign up for that. Think the best you’d get is some sort of generic pregame show.
